City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held a Long Service Award Ceremony on 20 November for 271 dedicated staff members in recognition of their long-term contributions to the University.

Attending the ceremony were Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President of CityUHK, Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research) and Professor Kevin Downing, Secretary to the Council.

In his address, Professor Lee thanked the staff for their contributions, emphasising that their dedicated service had been indispensable to the University’s achievements. He added that their unwavering support for students and colleagues over the years had been a driving force behind CityUHK’s steady progress.

Five of the recipients of the Long Service Awards have served at CityUHK for 40 years, and 124 have served for 30 to 35 years. In addition, 27 staff members received the 25-year service award, and the rest have served for 10 to 20 years.

Among the recipients, Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Lee Shau Kee Chair Professor (E-Learning) at CityUHK, has served the University for 35 years. Professor Ip served as Head of the Department of Computer Science from 1997 to 2003 and as Vice-President (Student Affairs) from 2013 to 2020.

Reflecting on his tenure, Professor Ip noted that his years at CityUHK have greatly benefited him both academically and in terms of interpersonal skills. He recalled his first visit to CityUHK when the campus buildings were still under construction. He said he was deeply impressed by the rapid development of the University, noting the completion of many facilities, including the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village in Whitehead, Ma On Shan, the International Centre and the CityUHK (Dongguan) campus.

Mr Yu

Mr Yu Choi-man, Senior Sports Attendant in Student Development Services, who has also served CityUHK for 35 years, shared his thoughts and experiences after many years working at the University at the ceremony.

Over the years, Mr Yu has been responsible for set-up and reservations at the University’s sports venues and has helped coordinate major sports events at the University. He stressed that the friendships he has established with students are what he values most. He expressed pride in witnessing CityUHK achieve a total of nine “Grand Slam” victories – referring to the overall men’s and women’s championships in the annual inter-university sports competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China.
