City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Doha, Qatar recently signed a Framework Collaboration Agreement, expanding CityUHK’s network and collaboration with one of Qatar’s top universities while marking a new milestone in fostering academic, research, and innovation partnerships in the Middle East.

A delegation from HBKU visited CityUHK earlier. Led by Dr Ahmad M. Hasnah, President of HBKU, the delegation included Dr Ala Al-Fuqaha, Acting Provost and Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning, Dr Adnan Abu-Dayya, Associate Vice-President, Research - Cluster Integration & Coordination, and Dr Hassan Said Bazzi, Associate Dean for External Affairs and Head of the Division of Science, Professor of Chemistry.

The HBKU’s delegation held discussions with Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President and University Distinguished Professor, and was warmly received by the CityUHK’s management team, including Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President, and Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice-President (Talent and International Strategy).

In his welcome address, President Boey stated that the collaboration strongly reflected the deeply shared commitment to academic excellence and global cooperation between the two institutions while securing partnerships with Belt and Road countries or regions.

“Like a friendship, these partnerships are built on shared values and a vision for the future.  And in today’s era, globalisation and innovation-focused economies are closely welded together,” he said. “Our agreement today also provides a roadmap for success both with the Middle East, an increasingly important market for higher education collaboration, and our participation in the Belt and Road Initiative.”

The agreement will enhance collaboration between the two institutions in a wide range of areas, particularly digital medicine. Under the partnership, the universities will explore joint academic programmes and advance collaborations in digital medicine to drive innovation in future healthcare.
