City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and the National Center for Translational Medicine (Shanghai) signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement on 10 September to jointly promote the development and collaboration of digital medicine, focusing on life sciences, biomedical engineering and data science.
The agreement was signed by Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise) of CityUHK, and Professor Fan Chunhai, Executive Director of the Institute of Translational Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Under the cooperation framework, the two parties will jointly establish a digital medicine research centre, as well as provincial and municipal science and technology innovation platforms. CityUHK will provide research teams and technical resources, while the National Center for Translational Medicine (Shanghai) will provide clinical resources and support. The aim of this collaboration is to facilitate the translation and application of related projects and promote interdisciplinary research.
Professor Yang said he was pleased to see CityUHK continue to deepen its collaboration with the government, industry, academic, research, investment and applications sectors in mainland China. He envisions that this collaboration will foster academic exchanges, nurture talent with an international vision and innovative capabilities, transform innovative ideas into practical applications, and further enhance the academic and social influence of both institutions.
Professor Fan expressed his expectation that the agreement would further deepen the technological innovation connection between Shanghai and Hong Kong, expand the innovation cooperation network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and provide support for building an open, collaborative and mutually beneficial innovation development ecosystem, aligned with the national innovation development strategy.
Professor Fan also participated in Digital Health Asia 2025, held at CityUHK, joining leading academics, industry pioneers and policymakers from around the world to discuss the application of cutting-edge technologies and future trends in digital health.
CityUHK has long been recognised as a leader in the development of digital medicine, while the National Center for Translational Medicine (Shanghai) has extensive clinical resources in translational medicine. Both institutions expect this collaboration to leverage the disciplinary strengths of both parties to accelerate the implementation of research projects.
