CityUHK strengthens strategic partnership with Hangzhou’s Linping District to establish CityUHK Hangzhou Innovation Research Institute
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is continuously strengthening comprehensive exchange and cooperation with mainland China, having established enhanced partnerships with several prominent mainland universities and setting up research institutes and innovation centres in Shenzhen, Futian, Chengdu, Qingdao, and Changsha.
Recently, CityUHK has forged a strategic partnership with Hangzhou’s Linping District to establish the CityUHK Hangzhou Innovation Research Institute in Linping New City, aiming to deepen collaboration between Hong Kong and Hangzhou in talent nurturing, innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, and the establishment of a fund for research outcome commercialisation.
Mr Chen Rugen, Vice-Chairman of the Hangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zhejiang Province, and Secretary of the Linping District Committee, and Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, attended the strategic cooperation agreement signing ceremony on 13 August and engaged in in-depth discussions on enhancing knowledge and technology exchange in innovation.
The agreement was signed by Mr Zhou Xuyin, Deputy Secretary of the Linping District Committee and District Governor, and Professor Chen Fu-rong, Associate Vice-President (Mainland Collaboration), with Mr Chen and President Boey witnessing the ceremony.
Also in attendance were Ms Yang Xia, Member of the Standing Committee of the Linping District Committee and Head of the Organisation Department; Mr Song Yu, Member of the Standing Committee of the Linping District Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Linping New City; Mr Hua Dong, Deputy District Governor of the Linping District People's Government; Professor Wang Xin, Dean of College of Science at CityUHK; Professor Wang Junling, Chair Professor of Physics at CityUHK; and Ms Sng Jing Li, Director of the Office of the President.
Mr Chen expressed gratitude for CityUHK’s continued support for Linping District’s development, noting that CityUHK, as a leading international research university, has unique strengths in cutting-edge engineering technology, interdisciplinary innovation, and industry-academia-research transformation systems, which align closely with Linping District’s strategic goal of building a vibrant regional innovation ecosystem. He hopes this agreement will accelerate research outcome commercialisation and international talent development, further fostering a global innovation ecosystem.
President Boey stated that the collaboration with Linping District focuses not only on scientific research but also on the practical transformation of innovation and entrepreneurship. He emphasised that CityUHK will leverage its strengths in engineering technology, artificial intelligence, and biomedicine to drive the commercialisation of research outcomes, aiming to establish a long-term cooperation mechanism to promote high-quality innovation projects and inject new momentum into Hangzhou’s development.
Both parties anticipate that this partnership, through the joint establishment of talent development platforms, innovation and entrepreneurship bases, and international technology transfer platforms, will enhance cooperation and exchange in industry, academia, and research between Hangzhou and Hong Kong.
