Digital Health Asia 2025 Interview Series – Professor Michael Yang Mengsu: Uniting global minds to forge new directions in healthcare
Leading global scholars, industry innovators, and policymakers will explore cutting-edge applications and future trends in digital health technology at Digital Health Asia 2025 (DHA 2025) from 8 to 10 September.
Organised by Times Higher Education (THE), in partnership with City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Institute of Digital Medicine (IDM), DHA 2025 is a timely platform for tackling the urgent challenges facing the healthcare sector. This is the first time THE’s Digital Health series will be held in Asia.
Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise) at CityUHK, remarked, “Digital medicine is all about data – how it is generated and obtained, and how we develop models to analyse and apply these data. By leveraging the latest advancements in data science and AI, we aim to enhance the whole healthcare system.”
Professor Yang emphasises that the summit aims to leverage IDM’s interdisciplinary capabilities to drive innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. “Digital health is a multidisciplinary approach,” he explained, “The biggest hurdle lies in how to effectively promote deep collaboration across diverse academic and professional domains. We’re building cross-disciplinary research teams within the University and we’re also committed to establishing an open and globally connected partnership network. Through close collaboration with world-leading universities, healthcare institutions, and industry stakeholders, we will ensure our research delivers meaningful real-world impact.”
As a young university and renowned on the international stage, CityUHK is steadfastly committed to advancing interdisciplinary research and innovation. IDM, established last year, brings together expertise and resources from life and health sciences, data science, AI, business, law, and social sciences. By connecting academia, clinical systems and industry, this cross-disciplinary international platform will address critical global challenges such as population ageing, public health, and the enhancement of healthcare service efficiency.
Professor Yang said IDM has already established academic partnerships with world-leading institutions such as Tsinghua University and the National University of Singapore that will pioneer research in digital medicine. On the clinical front, IDM works closely with the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong and major healthcare providers in mainland China. These partnerships will generate medical data for the support of rigorous clinical validation and real-world implementation of research outcomes.
In parallel, IDM is forging strong industry collaborations with leading enterprises, including China Resources Group and JD Health, accelerating the translation of innovative technologies into commercially viable healthcare solutions for delivering tangible social impact.
