CityUHK and Shanghai Pudong join hands to promote the integration of innovation and technology with industry and commerce
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Shanghai’s Pudong New District are engaged in exploratory discussions regarding a potential strategic collaboration in research and innovation. These talks aim to assess opportunities for creating a dynamic cross-border innovation and technology (I&T) platform that could integrate academic excellence with industrial ecosystems to accelerate scientific discovery and commercialisation. The potential partnership would leverage CityUHK’s world-class expertise in biomedicine, digital health, artificial intelligence, fintech, and legal innovation, combined with Pudong’s robust industrial infrastructure and supportive policy environment. Key objectives under discussion include enhancing Hong Kong’s R&D capabilities, accelerating the industrialisation of research outcomes, and cultivating a sustainable model for collaborative innovation.
A delegation led by Mr Zhang Feng, Standing Committee Member of the Pudong New District CPC Committee and President of the Shanghai Pudong Overseas Friendship Association (POFA), recently visited CityUHK. Members of the delegation included Ms Liu Chunmei, Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Pudong New District and Executive Vice President of the POFA; Ms Ding Xiangqian, Secretary-General of the POFA; Mr Xie Fei, Director of the Lawyer Affairs Division, Bureau of Justice of Pudong New District; Mr Ding Zhihong, Director of the Medical Administration Division, Health Commission of Pudong New District, and Mr Zhu Bin, Member of the CPC Committee, Zhangjiang Town, Pudong New District.
The delegation was warmly received by senior CityUHK leadership, including Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise); Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research); Professor Michael Tse Chi-kong, Associate Vice-President (Innovation) and Director of the CityUHK Academy of Innovation; Professor Johnny Ho Chung-yin, Associate Vice-President (Enterprise); Professor Lin Feng, Dean of the School of Law; Professor Xu Chenjie, Associate Dean (Research) of the College of Biomedicine; Professor Yu Xinge, Associate Director of the Institute of Digital Medicine; Professor Yan Houmin, Director of the Laboratory for AI-Powered Financial Technologies (AIFT); Ms Sng Jing Li, Director of the Office of the President; and Dr Shi Qi, Manager of the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science.
Central to the potential collaboration is the exploration of mechanisms that could harness expertise across key CityUHK units, including the College of Biomedicine, Institute of Digital Medicine, Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science, Laboratory for AI-Powered Financial Technologies (AIFT), School of Law, CityUHK Academy of Innovation, and the Office of the Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise). Discussions focus on potential pathways for pioneering research, industry-driven talent development, and translating academic breakthroughs into real-world solutions within Pudong’s industrial landscape.
CityUHK anticipates that future collaborative projects with Pudong will leverage its scientific research strengths in tandem with Pudong’s industrial resources, deepen Hong Kong-Shanghai integration in I&T and this synergy will inject new momentum into regional integration efforts. Through cross-border talent development, technology transfer and policy coordination, we aim to jointly establish an internationally leading innovation and technology ecosystem that encompasses fundamental research, technology transformation, industrial innovation and talent cultivation.
