Breakthrough technologies developed by a materials engineer and his team at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hold great promise for effective cancer treatment and energy saving. Both applications were developed based on the study of photoluminescence and light scattering mechanisms, as well as the plasmonic properties of micro-nanostructures.

CityU’s new technology prevents post-surgery bacterial infection

A research team led by Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho, a materials engineering expert at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has developed a capacitive coating that kills bacteria when it is charged with electricity. When applied to orthopedic implants such as artificial joints and dental implants, the novel technology can reduce the risk of infection after surgery and help patients recover more quickly.

Ten CityU scholars honoured for highly cited papers

Ten faculty members from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have been named as Highly Cited Researchers for 2018 by Clarivate Analytics, reflecting the high academic standard of our faculty and our excellent research performance. The list recognises scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated substantial influence in their fields through publication of multiple highly cited papers ranked in the top 1% by citations between 2006 and 2016.

CityU physicist elected Fellow of American Physical Society

Professor Ruiqin Zhang of the Department of Physics at CityU was cited by APS “for path-breaking contributions to the development of quantum-mechanical many-body methods, as well as modelling and simulation of large electronic systems such as those with nanosurfaces, promoting their applications in the fields of environment, energy, biology and medicine”.

Top mathematicians elected Fellows of European Academy of Sciences

Two world-class scientists at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have been elected Fellows of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics. The newly elected academicians are Professor Felipe Cucker and Professor Yang Tong, both from CityU’s Department of Mathematics.
