Architecture Stream
The Architecture stream nurtures students' intellectual, analytical, and creative abilities, preparing them to become thoughtful and skilled professionals in the field of architecture. Through a curriculum grounded in design thinking, technical knowledge, and critical inquiry, students develop strong communication and design skills. 


Surveying Stream
The Surveying stream is designed to develop students into competent and reflective professionals in the surveying field. Emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the program enables students to approach complex spatial and land-related challenges with analytical precision and collaborative problem-solving. 
 

Both Architecture and Surveying nurtures professionals to become the gatekeepers of built facilities.

Architects are professionals to support Hong Kong's move to a knowledge-based economy and ensure its built environment quality befits its world-class city status. The stream curriculum aims to offer well-balanced teaching and learning with an emphasis on the technological aspects of architectural design and construction. It is designed to equip participants with the concept of full integration between architectural studies with other disciplines that produce the built environment, including building services and civil engineering, property development, surveying, property management, landscape architecture and urban planning.

Surveyors are always regarded by the general public as building economists, contract advisors, doctors and managers. The duties of quantity surveyors are to ensure a construction project is within budget and free of unnecessary contractual risks. As for the building surveyors, they uphold the standards of the building regulations by inspecting and approving the building design, examine the safety performance of existing buildings, etc. Surveyors’ legal, economic and technical knowledge in construction make them very sought after for managing a project.

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following major-specific entrance requirements:

  • level 3 or above in HKDSE Mathematics;
  • grade C or above in GCE A Level Mathematics;
  • subject score of 4 or above in the IB Mathematics subject group; OR
  • other qualifications equivalent to any one of the above and approved by the University.

Our Target

Architecture Stream: We aim to provide a basis for continuing professional development and encourage professional specialization and higher academic study. This major is designed to prepare graduates for a multidisciplinary professional architectural practice by equipping them with a deep understanding of diverse architectural knowledge and a command of technology and integration that will enable them to serve the building industry as architects or other professionals. Graduates will become the driving force behind innovative and creative architectural designs that reflect a balance and integration of design and technology.

Surveying and Urban Informatics Stream: We aim to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to i) participate in real estate and infrastructure developments, ii) analyse building development proposals, iii) appraise contemporary building science and engineering techniques, iv) advise on appropriate means of procurement, v) pursue financial control of construction projects and vi) apply a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of construction processes.

The construction industry has been one of the major drivers of the economies of Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland. This trend is expected to continue in view of recent major infrastructure developments in Hong Kong.

Architecture Stream: This major aims to provide students with a sound professional and technological foundation to pursue higher professional degree studies. Given the fast pace of urbanization in the Chinese mainland and the rest of Asia, millions of people will move to cities in the coming decades. Constructing new towns and restoring old towns is an immense task. The number of architectural professionals in the Chinese mainland and throughout Asia is far from sufficient to meet the increasing social demand and expected growth as the economy improves and the property market recovers.

Surveying and Urban Informatics Stream: Surveyors will find career opportunities in many areas including real-estate development, construction, building economics, law, contracts, design, maintenance, project and facilities management and finance.

Graduates of both Surveying and Architecture streams are expected to be in high demand.

What You Will Be Studying

Architecture Stream:

The courses in the curriculum are built around five themes:

  • Architecture Studio/ Project
  • Technology – Technical and Environmental
  • Communication
  • Architecture History and Societal
  • Professional Practice

The curriculum is structured around the Architectural Design studio sequence and supplemented by a broad spectrum of courses covering the subject areas.

The first two Architectural Design studios seek to strengthen your overall grasp of the understanding of space design and site responses. The next two seek to allow students to explore an integrated design for a building typology and responses of architecture to urbanism, respectively.  The final year comprises a Final Year Design Research Project, which enables students to integrate their knowledge and skills acquired so far, into exploring a topic of interest selected by themselves, resulting in a related architectural proposition. This takes place under the supervision of an academic staff member.

Surveying and Urban Informatics Stream:

  • Technology: Construction Methods, Building Design and Appraisal, Building Science and Engineering, Materials and Products, Energy Utilisation, Fire Safety, Building Services, Building Structures and Maintenance Technology.
  • Communications: Information Systems, Professional Practice and Language.
  • Economics: Tendering Strategies, Life Cycle Costing, Budgets, Development Appraisal, Measurement and Valuation of Construction Work.
  • Law: Hong Kong Legal System, Law of Contract, Tort and Property, Construction Contracts, Building and Planning Control.
  • Management: Principles of Management, Supervision, Organisation, Planning, Decision-Making, Property and Project Management and Computer Applications.
Industrial Training and International Exchange

The College of Engineering and the Department offer work placement opportunities through internship schemes that provide students with full-time job attachments to firms not only in Hong Kong, but also in the PRC and overseas. Through such placements, students will:

  • gain solid experience in a real-life work environment;
  • develop problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills;
  • learn the right attitudes towards work and professionalism; and
  • broaden their experience and enhance their employability.

Professional Recognition

The Architecture Stream will seek accreditation by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and Architects Registration Board in 2027. The former architecture programme - Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies was accredited since 2014.

About Programme

The major aims to nurture students' cutting-edge engineering knowledge, computational, experimental and analytical techniques to plan, design, implement and improve technology-based manufacturing and operations systems. It emphasizes the technological, analytical and managerial skills of integrating different technologies in intelligent manufacturing systems.

BEng in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering students are trained to become analytical and versatile engineering graduates with the right skill-sets to adapt to the rapid technological advancements in the world of modern enterprises, intelligent production, and boundary-less information flow and integration.

BEng in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering graduates

  • have a good understanding of today’s science, engineering and technology;
  • are knowledgeable about the high-end technology and managerial skills of manufacturing system fitting the Industry 4.0;
  • use systems concepts and tools to analyse processes and operational problems in enterprises, and to improve processes, operations and qualities in enterprises; and
  • are equipped with analytic and quantitative skill sets to grapple with real-world problems that are associated with massive amounts of data and information in enterprises.

The programme aims to provide the best possible undergraduate education with cutting-edge engineering knowledge and techniques to plan and build technology-based manufacturing and operations systems. Department of Systems Engineering

The Department of Systems Engineering (SYE) offers the BEng in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. This major aims to develop the abilities of our students in integrating intelligent manufacturing systems with:

  1. Industrial Internet of Things,
  2. Automation and Robotics,
  3. Management Analytics,Artificial Intelligence, and
  4. Industrial Big Data

As an outcome, our graduates will possess the practical skills in engineering sciences, design innovations, automation and data analytics, so that:

  1. Our graduates can apply these skills to improve and innovate various operations of modern manufacturing enterprises in the Industry 4.0 setting;
  2. Our graduates can also apply these skills to service industries and commercial enterprises, in automating their various business operations, to push for ever higher efficiency.

2. The General Education and College required courses equip students with the necessary background in English, basic sciences and computer programming.The major core courses are divided into three blocks, namely, the Core Technology Block, Integration Block and Application Block –

  • The Core Technology Block includes the scientific principles and applications in industrial engineering and management science, electronics and semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • The Integration Block emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge knowledge and applications, particularly in data analytics, intelligent manufacturing systems, automation and robotics, Internet-of-Things, and Industry 4.0.
  • The Application Block provides practical opportunities and industrial experience to the students with the Engineering Workshop, Final-Year Project, Industrial Attachment and Internship.

3. Our curriculum also offers elective courses for students with choices to broaden/deepen their knowledge in areas such as electronics, manufacturing technology, and industrial systems engineering.

Why BEng Mechanical Engineering?

As mechanical engineers are irreplaceably important in our society, Mechanical Engineering represents a fundamental branch of engineering knowledge. To fulfil the rapid demands of expanding markets in the area of automation engineering, dynamical and control analysis, engineering design, and materials/product testing, our Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering programme at the City University of Hong Kong has been established in order to offer a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum which prepares students with analytical and quantitative skills to tackle scientific and engineering problems, independent and critical thinking to develop/enhance engineering products, and integrated creativity and expertise to generate novel product designs to support the sustainable development of the industries.

  • Motivated by the fact that the prospects for the development of the Mechanical Engineering industry are greatly expanding, the future manpower demands in the related Mechanical Engineering fields will be greatly increasing.
  • Since the establishment of the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) policy back in 2006, original design manufacturing (ODM) of all the “made-in-HK” consumer products, involves conceptual engineering design and product research and development, has become the key role of Hong Kong companies.
  • In the coming years, it is expected that Hong Kong will have stronger needs in the Mechanical Engineering applications such as intelligent consumer products, improved product design and manufacturing, robotics and industrial automation, synthesis and testing of new materials, micro-devices and instrumentation for medical/healthcare purposes.

Our Target

The aim of the Mechanical Engineering major is to prepare students with solid, fundamental knowledge to meet the needs of industries. Our graduates are expected to serve and contribute to a broad range of mechanical engineering industries in their future careers, working for instance as chartered engineers, chief administrators/managers of technical teams, and technology consultants. Some of them may even choose to be entrepreneurs for their own start-up companies.

The objectives of the major are to:

  • provide a systematic curriculum that combines education, research and development of innovative technologies and enable students to tackle engineering problems in mechanical related areas efficiently and independently;
  • equip students with critical thinking, independent research, qualitative and quantitative analysis capacities. Students can perform high-impact and leading edge research and development for the continuous advancements of both industrial and academic expertise;
  • prepare students for professional employment in areas such as engineering design of materials, dynamical and control analysis, automation engineering and micro and nano technologies; and

Mechanical engineering is a fundamental branch of engineering. It fulfils the rapid demands of the expanding consumer products and infrastructural development markets and other engineering areas such as automation engineering, dynamical and control analysis, engineering design, and materials/product testing. The Mechanical Engineering major will help you to develop a comprehensive and dynamic knowledge-set; flexible analytical and quantitative skills to tackle scientific and engineering problems; independent and critical thinking to develop/enhance engineering products; and integrated creativity and expertise to generate novel product designs to support the sustainable development of industries.

What You Will Be Studying

While maintaining the major aspects of mechanical engineering knowledge (e.g. engineering mechanics, materials engineering, mechanical product design, mechatronics, dynamics and controls, and thermal fluids), this programme focuses on the following areas for the future needs of society:

  • Product design with comprehensive considerations of high levels of functionality (e.g. smart home and appliances) and environmentally-friendly product design and manufacturing.
  • Automation (with control algorithms, sensors and actuators) and system integration of machines ranging from consumer products and building facilities to transportation vehicles.
  • Providing a solid background in and integrated knowledge of both conventional and emerging mechanical engineering techniques, such that graduates can generate new products and serve as the next generation to inherit and handle the obligations of existing occupations.

The choice of electives provides students with opportunities to enhance their interests and apply what they have learnt. Appropriate quality assurance processes and guidelines will be adopted to ensure that the new programme is managed and delivered in the same way as other well-recognised international undergraduate programmes.

The BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering programme at City University of Hong Kong offers a comprehensive education in the latest developments of the field. To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and have studied an engineering-related or a science-related discipline at a high school or post-secondary institution.

For senior-year (Advanced Standing II) admission, applicants are normally expected to have completed an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of ≥3.0 or an equivalent overall mark, or a credit award in an engineering-related or science-related discipline.

What You Will Be Studying

First-year core courses are introductory courses in electronics and electrical engineering. These courses aim to provide students with a solid background for more advanced courses in later years. They are supplemented with plenty of hands-on experience to teach students concepts and skills in analog circuits, digital circuits, and software programming. Upon completing these basic courses, students will advance to learn more complex subjects in their second and final years.

Core subjects include Principles of Communications, Logic Circuit Design, Electronic Devices and Circuits, Signals and Systems, Microcomputer Systems, Computer Programming, Systems and Control, Introduction to Electric Power Systems, Introduction to Electric Machines and Drives, and Applied Electromagnetics. Most core courses are supported by relevant laboratory work. Additionally, students will participate in a second-year “design project course” that offers opportunities to solve real-life problems and applications in an interdisciplinary and teamwork setting.

In the final year, students will choose technical electives covering various specialized subject areas. Examples include Microwave Circuits for 5G Wireless Product Design, Fundamentals of Antenna Design, Mobile Data Networks, Optical Fibre Communications, Introduction to Integrated Photonics, Sustainable Energy Systems, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, and Data Engineering and Learning Systems. Students will also work independently on their Final Year Project, solving high-level technological problems. Those who wish to gain work experience before graduation may apply for the Professional Internship Program in their final year.

To maintain Hong Kong's competitiveness, the government has taken steps to boost technology-based, high-value-added services and industries. Electronic and electrical technologies are among the areas identified for focused support. Even in the banking, finance and business sectors, personnel with a solid background in technology are in great demand in this increasingly complex technological age.

Why BSc Computer Science?

This programme is one of the leading Computer Science programmes in Hong Kong, providing students with a well-balanced curriculum and solid education in both the theoretical and practical aspects of computing. This foundation enables students to lead successful careers as professional software developers, system architects, system analysts, technology officers, etc. Besides acquiring a broad knowledge of Computer Science, students can elect to specialise in different technology streams, such as artificial intelligence, information security, multimedia, software engineering/project management or data science.

Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science was established in 1984, and has evolved from a teaching-oriented department into one that excels in both teaching and research.

The Department launched its first BSc in Computer Studies in 1987 (renamed and restructured as the BSc Computer Science in 2000), followed by the MSc in Computer Science in 1991. The Department also produced its first PhD graduate in 1994.

In addition to offering traditional courses such as foundations of computer science, computer architecture and software engineering, our curriculum exposes students to the latest advances in cloud computing, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Students have the opportunity to undertake a major design and development project in areas such as electronic commerce, virtual reality, multimedia, computer vision, cloud computing, and information security.

All teaching within the Department is subject to stringent quality assurance procedures. The Department maintains state-of-the-art computing facilities, including a private cloud infrastructure for teaching activities support and a high-throughput computing cluster for computationally intensive tasks involved in various research activities.

The Department's research foci include bioinformatics, cloud computing, data science, evolutionary computation and metaheuristic, information security, machine learning, mobile computing, multimedia computing, software engineering, vision and graphics. Our staff have contributed intellectually and professionally to the advancement of these fields.

Our Target

We provide students with a thorough grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of the computer science discipline. This prepares them for successful careers as system architects and technology officers in the continually developing information technology environment. Our flexible curriculum enables students to develop a strong foundation in the overall discipline and specialisation in a particular area. Through a wide range of electives, our students can keep pace with trends in technology.

Industrial Training and International Exchange

After completing the first two years of full-time study, CS students will take a 9-month IT Professional Internship (ITPP) course in the third year. This structured placement/internship programme enables our students to integrate and apply what they have learnt in class in a real-world environment. Students perform IT-related projects/developments, and learn how to work as a team member in business or government organizations. In the past, we had students who work at international computer vendors, such as Siemens Ltd., Huawei Tech. Investment Co., Limited; at banks such as HSBC and the Bank of East Asia; at the Hong Kong SAR government and related organisations such as the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Hospital Authority, the Housing Authority and other enterprises such as Hongkong Electric, Deloitte China and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited. During the placement year, students will take one day off weekly from work to study a number of courses. Why BEng Architectural Engineering?

Architectural engineering (or building services engineering) is closely related to our living, as it deals with the design of electricity supply, lighting, heating and air-conditioning, fire-fighting system, fresh water provision, waste water discharge, and lift and escalator as required in a built facility.

With an increasing concern about health and sustainability, building service engineers also devote their expertise in designing negative pressure infectious disease wards, and smart monitoring and control systems to reduce building energy consumption, not to mention about improving the indoor environmental quality and building thermal comfort.

Why BEng Environmental Science and Engineering?

Environmental engineering is concerned with the solution of environmental problems. Examples include:

  • Air pollution
  • Marine pollution
  • Water treatment
  • Waste and recycling

Nowadays environmental engineering is becoming increasingly important. With the challenges posed by urbanisation and climate change, environmental engineers are needed to safeguard human health, protect the environment and help build a sustainable society. Environmental engineering is an exciting and rewarding career for young people who want to use their technical skills to improve society.

Environmental engineering is extremely diverse and attracts people with different interests and talents.  Specific problems may require specialised knowledge of biology, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering. Environmental engineers may work in the field, laboratory or office.

What You Will Be Studying

The EVE major aims to provide professional education to train students to be knowledgeable in environmental science and engineering so that they can work as environmental professionals contributing to improved environmental performance and sustainability. The programme objectives are:

  • to provide students with broad-based knowledge and fundamentals of environmental science and engineering with three streams, namely environmental technology, sustainability and environmental management, and environmental science;

  • to produce graduates who can perform competently as environmental professionals, scientists and engineers in commercial, industrial and non-governmental organisations, civil services and educational institutions;

  • to produce graduates that are aware of global, societal, ethical and professional issues and responsibilities in the practice of environmental science and engineering and make contributions to the betterment of the society; and

  • to nurture students’ ability to engage in life-long learning and professional development.

To prepare students for their future careers, the EVE major comprises courses in science, engineering, and environmental applications. Students will study air pollution, wastewater treatment and water resources, among other topics, as well as experimental and computational techniques. Since environmental problems cannot be considered in isolation, students will also be trained in sustainability, environmental management and environmental impact assessment.

Since Hong Kong is a small but densely populated place with an advanced economy, we are facing many pressing environmental challenges. Our EVE graduates are now pursuing careers in monitoring or mitigating environmental pollution for government departments, developing new technologies for engineering firms, and advising companies on sustainable practices. They enjoy a wide range of career opportunities in various units such as government departments, NGOs, secondary schools and private companies:

  • Energy engineers in the following types of companies: utility (electricity and gas), energy services, environmental consulting, environmental engineering, transport (mass transit, buses, ferries, ocean-going vessels, airlines, aircraft services), government departments, etc.

  • Environmental/sustainability engineers  in corporations, property management companies, real-estate developers, and construction, manufacturing and transportation industries, etc.

  • Professionals in companies/institutes involved in researching, developing, manufacturing and/or selling products related to energy generation, storage, efficiency and conservation, and environmental technology to prevent, control, treat and remediate environmental pollution

  • Financial analysts and investors in financial institutions with business in energy and environmental investments and/or loans 

  • Consultants in non-government organisations with activities related to energy and the environment

  • Secondary school teachers responsible for science curriculum

Some of our graduates also pursue advanced degrees in related areas.

Professional Recognition

Our undergraduate programme, Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Science and Engineering (EVE), is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).  The EVE programme meets the academic requirement for HKIE Corporate Membership in the environmental discipline.  Additionally, our EVE students may choose to enrol in optional electives if they are interested in being a HKIE member in the Building Services (BSS) discipline.

The HKIE has agreements for reciprocal recognition of professional qualifications with engineering authorities in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Mainland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and agreements of co-operation with other organisations in Europe, the Mainland, North America and Southeast Asia.

What You Will Be Studying

Offering a solid foundation in data science and intelligent systems, the BSc Data and Systems Engineering programme equips students with strong analytical and decision-making skills, enabling them to analyse, manage and improve enterprise-class systems. The enterprises considered may be businesses, governmental institutions or service-oriented engineering organisations. Main data science application subjects in this program covers data-driven financial technologies, smart city artificial intelligence, and industrial internet of things.

BSc Data and Systems Engineering students are nurtured to become analytically minded and versatile graduates capable of collecting, analysing and interpreting big data and transforming these massive amounts of information into insights into ways of improving decision making in their organisations.

The BSc Data Science aims to provide data science graduates with essential training in the quantitative methods, statistical analysis techniques, data mining technology and computing tools required for the effective use and analysis of big and complex data for real-world applications that involve making sense of complex data to realize planning and decision making.
