Over 450 Form 7 students flocked to IT workshops offered by CityU's Division of Computer Studies, from 20 July to 8 August, 2004. They gained hands-on experience working with programmes such as Java.
The FSE Summer Day Camp offers secondary school students a chance to experience what learning at university level is like.
In a workshop organized by the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, 20 to 22 July 2004, 38 secondary school participants learned the basics of mechatronic engineering and constructed miniature vehicles. Some outstanding works won the participating teams honors and prizes during a competition held on the last day of the workshop.
PhD student Mr Mei Yongfeng has won the 2004 Young Scientist Award from the European Materials Research Society in recognition of his outstanding research in microelectronics technology.
“The rapid development of technology induces significant changes in the design, construction and facilities of modern buildings and our living environment,” said Mrs Julie Mo, Head of the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), who opened the Built Expo, 2-3 April 2004.
In recognition of their quality management, two student placement programmes offered by CityU's Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), the Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS) and the Co-operative Education Scheme (CES), have been awarded an ISO 9001:2000 accreditation from SGS Hong Kong Ltd.
CityU's College of Higher Vocational Studies signed a collaborative agreement with Coventry University in the UK on 9 February to launch a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business Information Technology. It is the first full-time top-up degree programme in IT and e-commerce related fields jointly put forth by the College's Division of Computer Studies and an overseas institution.
On 29 July, when Ng Cheuk-wah and Hui Kit-no, two information technology majors, presented their supply management software in Shenzhen at Astec Electronics Co Ltd, a partner in CityU's Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS), they got a unanimous thumbs-up. Astec's senior management expressed keen interest in using as well as selling the product.
While most universities put a hold on their summer internship programmes because of SARS, CityU has secured 348 job training placements in 112 companies in Hong Kong and the Mainland this year. The placements, for year-two students from three faculties, represent a significant increase over last year's 240 placements in 64 companies. Standard Chartered Bank, Sogo Hong Kong Co. Ltd and Maunsell Consultants Asia Ltd are among the new companies involved in the programme.
A technology-driven customer relationship management (CRM) laboratory was launched by City University's Division of Commerce on 29 April. NEC Hong Kong Limited donated equipment and software and will provide technical support. The Commerce Applications Technology Laboratory (CAT Lab) will provide an advanced environment for staff and students to gain the latest customer relationship management skills.
