Court briefed on the latest developments at CityUHK

The Principal Officers of CityUHK brief the Court on latest developments of the University.

Members of the Court were given a comprehensive overview of recent developments at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) at the 21st meeting of the Court, held on 21 November.

In his remarks, Dr Chung Shui-ming, Pro-Chancellor, acknowledged that the University had achieved remarkable results over the past year in research, teaching and community service. He highlighted its outstanding accomplishments across multiple fields, demonstrating strong growth momentum. He also noted CityUHK’s active expansion of international collaboration in recent years, including the establishment of a new campus in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, further solidifying the University’s leadership position in higher education both regionally and globally.

Dr Chung expressed his hope that Court Members would continue to serve as a bridge, strengthening connections between the University and the wider community and helping CityUHK reach new heights in academic excellence, innovative research and talent development.

Ms Lilian Chiang Sui-fook, Deputy Chairman of the Council, reported on CityUHK’s key developments. She noted that the CityUHK team had undertaken several overseas visits this year to expand its global network, with destinations including the Chinese Mainland, Kazakhstan, the Middle East, Turkey and the United Kingdom, thereby broadening and consolidating the University’s international partnerships.

She also highlighted the formulation of the Strategic Plan 2025-30 to proactively respond to societal needs and guide the University’s future direction; the establishment of the Institute for Materials Innovation and the College of Biomedicine to drive interdisciplinary collaboration and inject new impetus into research; and the continued encouragement of innovation and entrepreneurship through the HK Tech 300 programme, which has fostered a thriving start-up ecosystem, delivering tangible economic benefits for Hong Kong.

Ms Chiang emphasised that the University is committed to upholding high standards of governance and combining strategic partnerships, academic advancement and infrastructure investment to lead CityUHK into a new chapter of growth.

Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, remarked that the University’s outstanding achievements are widely recognised. In 2025, CityUHK made its debut in the global top 100 of ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, becoming the second university in Hong Kong to enter the global top 100 across all four major academic rankings.

He stressed that the future of research lies in interdisciplinary collaboration and reaffirmed CityUHK’s commitment to promoting innovation and global cooperation. Through initiatives such as the Distinguished Visiting Professors Scheme, the University aims to attract world-renowned scholars and build an international platform for research collaboration.

Professor Lu Chun, Vice-President (Mainland Strategy), then provided an update on the progress of CityUHK (Dongguan) since its establishment one year ago, including the admission results for the 2025/26 academic year.

Professor Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment, presented CityUHK's sustainability efforts and achievements, outlining a series of measures and educational initiatives designed to support carbon-reduction goals.
