CityU to bestow honorary fellowships on four distinguished persons

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) will confer the title of Honorary Fellow on four distinguished persons in recognition of their significant contributions to the development of, and service to, the University and the community.

They are Professor Albert Ip Yuk-keung, Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, BBS, MH, JP, Mr Wong Ming-yam, SBS, BBS, JP, and Mr Johnny Yeung Chi-hung, MH. The Honorary Fellow Presentation Ceremony will be held in September.

Professor Albert Ip Yuk-keung, Chairman of the World Green Organisation, is an international banking and real estate executive with over 30 years’ experience in global financial institutions such as Citigroup and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, encompassing corporate banking, real estate finance, risk management, wealth management and transaction banking in US and Asia. He was Managing Director of Citigroup, Managing Director of Investments, Merrill Lynch (Asia Pacific), and CEO of Langham Hospitality Investments. Professor Ip currently sits on the boards of five companies as an Independent Non-executive Director, including New World Development, Power Assets, Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong, Eagle Asset Management, and Lifestyle International Holdings.

His long association with CityU includes serving as Chairman of the Career Development Advisory Committee for the College of Business (CB), a committee that he initiated, a Member of CB’s International Advisory Board, and Adjunct Professor.

Professor Ip has keenly supported the development of CityU students over the years. He successfully placed over 120 CB students into many of the 100 renowned companies on the CAReer Launch Scheme in 2020 and direct company referrals for business student nominations. He has donated to, and raised money for, CB students, primarily for career development, and he received the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree Award from CB in 2012. An enthusiastic supporter of community services, he was a Council Member of the Better Hong Kong Foundation; a Member of the Legal Aid Services Council, HKSAR; a Member of the Committee on Certification for Principalship HKSAR; and a Co-opted Member of the Finance Committee, Urban Renewal Authority.

Professor Ip holds a BS degree from Washington University in St. Louis, summa cum laude, and MS degrees from Cornell University and Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a trustee of the Board of Trustees at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, Chairman and Founder of Brilliant International Group Limited, is a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist. He has contributed significantly to the business sector through numerous business and community organisations. Most recently, he was unanimously elected President of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong. He is also Council Member of Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Member of Commerce and Economic Development Bureau Task Force on External Relations, to name just a few.

Firmly committed to community, education and charity issues, he has set up bursaries and donated to several local universities, including CityU. His other public roles include: Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Guangxi Autonomous Region, China; Council Member of the Better Hong Kong Foundation; Founder and Chairman of Yan Oi Tong Mrs Shi Lop Tak Youth and Children Medical Foundation; and Director of Board of the Directors of Merchant Support for Rehabilitated Offenders.

He received the Medal of Honour from the HKSAR Government in 2007 and was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2010. In 2017, he received the Bronze Bauhinia Star for his meritorious contributions, particularly to the industrial development of Hong Kong and the promotion of offender rehabilitation and equestrian sport for youth.

Dr Shi, a graduate of CityU’s Executive Master of Business Administration, strongly supports his alma mater. He is Honorary Vice-President of the CityU Foundation; and Executive Classroom 6208 in the Lau Ming Wai Academic Building was named the “Allen Shi Lop Tak Executive Classroom” in appreciation of his generous support.

Mr Wong Ming-yam, Founding Director of InnoLink Investments Limited, is passionate about innovation and technology development. He serves as Director or Non-executive Director of a number of technology companies. Prior to this, he was the Senior Vice-President of Royal Philips Electronics. He has actively served society through membership of several government boards and committees for more than 35 years. He has been a member of the Assessment Panel of Small Entrepreneur Research Assistance Programme of the Innovation and Technology Commission, HKSAR; a Member and Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council; Director of the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation; Chairman of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited; and an Ex-officio Member of the Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology and the Committee on Innovation, Technology and Re-industrialisation of the HKSAR.

Among his many other public roles, he is Honorary Chairman of the Hong Kong Electronics & Technologies Association and the Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association; a Member of Steering Committee on Research Themes and Topics of the Research Grants Council of HKSAR; a Member of the Cyberport Advisory Panel; Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Asia America MultiTechnology Association (Pearl River Chapter Cradle Program); Chairman of the CreateSmart Initiative Vetting Committee of Create Hong Kong; and Chairman of the Departmental Advisory Committee, Department of Electrical Engineering, CityU.

Mr Wong was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1999 and was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2012, and Silver Bauhinia Star in 2018, by the HKSAR Government in recognition of his distinguished public service and his long-term and exemplary contributions to promoting innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.

Mr Johnny Yeung Chi-hung, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fujikon Industrial Holdings Limited, is a renowned industrialist with over 50 years’ experience in the electronics and acoustics industry. Instrumental in the development of the industry, Mr Yeung was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of Vocational Training Council in 2019, received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Electronics Industry Council in 2018, the Medal of Honour from the HKSAR Government in 2014, and the Director of the Year Award from the Hong Kong Institute of Directors in 2007, among others. He was also elected Industrial Fellow of Warwick University in 2014, and Honorary Fellow by the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries in 2004.

In addition, Mr Yeung actively participates in industry and business organisations. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong; Member of the Innovation and Technology Training Board, Vocational Training Council; Council Member of the Governing Council of the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency; Honorary Chairman of Hong Kong Electronics Industries Association; Honorary Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Dongguan Electronics Industries Association; and Deputy Supervisor and President of Humen Branch of Dongguan City Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment.

Enthusiastic about community services and charity work, and possessing a passionate interest in education, Mr Yeung has funded the construction of several primary schools in mainland China. Moreover, to nurture talent for society, he has donated in his wife’s name to establish G. T. (Ellen Yeung) College in Hong Kong in 2000.
