[HKCML] Workshop on “Reconceptualizing Sustainability: Critical Perspectives for International Economic Law Reform”

School of Law Research Centre for Hong Kong Commercial and Maritime Law has successfully hosted a closed-door academic workshop titled “Reconceptualizing Sustainability: Critical Perspectives for International Economic Law Reform” from 5 to 6 December 2025.

The two-day event brought together scholars from institutions across Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America to explore how international trade and investment regimes can be reimagined to address sustainability in a more inclusive, multidimensional, and development-sensitive way.

Participants presented work-in-progress papers examining topics such as Global South development priorities, industrial policy, regulatory space, climate governance, and the evolving role of international dispute settlement. Lively discussions were enriched by four distinguished discussants who offered critical insights and facilitated comparative reflections across panels.

We extend our sincere thanks to all presenters and discussants for their thoughtful contributions, and to Ms. Claire HUANG Dibo for providing exceptional administrative support.

As we enter the examination and marking period, we wish all colleagues a smooth end to the semester and a restful holiday season. We look forward to welcoming many of our participants back to Hong Kong in the future.
