Professor Alexander Loke Joins Thomson Reuters Executive Roundtable on Operationalising GenAI in Legal Practice

Professor Alexander LOKE, Associate Dean of CityUHK School of Law and Director of the Hong Kong Commercial and Maritime Law Centre, was invited to an executive roundtable hosted by Thomson Reuters Hong Kong on 17 August 2026, joining Ms Kirsty ROTH, Chief Operations and Technology Officer of Thomson Reuters, Mr Vishal BALI, Managing Director for Asia and Emerging Markets, and senior legal leaders from across Hong Kong for a discussion on how the legal profession is adapting to generative AI (GenAI).

The invitation underscores CityUHK School of Law's position as a valued partner in conversations among legal practitioners, educators and LawTech providers about how AI is reshaping legal work and legal training.

Speaking at the roundtable, Professor Loke offered a perspective on the challenges confronting lawyers in an AI-augmented work environment:

"The lawyer will remain relevant as long as s/he can value-add to the outputs generated by GenAI software. How valuable s/he is depends on how much s/he can value-add."

The qualities that AI cannot replicate — such as judgment, discernment, and contextual expertise — are the ones most worth cultivating.
