Reuters Quotes Professor Lauren Yu-Hsin Lin on Shein’s Hong Kong IPO
Professor Lauren Yu-Hsin Lin of the School of Law at City University of Hong Kong was recently quoted by Reuters on Shein’s decision to pursue its long-awaited initial public offering in Hong Kong after abandoning earlier plans to list in New York and London.
The Reuters report, “How Shein Had to Make Peace with China to Finally Go Public,” examines how the fast-fashion company’s listing journey reflects the growing influence of geopolitics, national identity, and regulatory considerations on companies’ access to global capital markets.
Commenting on Shein’s eventual choice of Hong Kong, Professor Lin told Reuters:
Corporate identity and geopolitical alignment are increasingly important determinants of where a company can list.
Shein’s experience illustrates a broader transformation in global capital market competition. These developments are closely related to Professor Lin’s ongoing research project, “Competing for Value or Values? The Future of Global Capital Market Competition,” supported by the Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS), a competitive funding initiative by Hong Kong's Research Grants Council (RGC).
