Beyond Conventional Lectures: Hands-on AI Adoption Fueled by Industry Veterans

In the second of our two-part feature on this summer’s 1.5-credit elective courses, we turn to a course that brought students face-to-face with some of the biggest names in legal AI.

The School was pleased to have Ms Natalie Li —  a seasoned senior TMT lawyer recognised on the Legal 500 GC Powerlist and a three-time LexisNexis 40 under 40 honouree — deliver an innovative, hands-on course titled “AI Adoption: The Laboratory of Infinite Knowledge”.

Breaking away from conventional lectures, the programme immersed students in practical exploration. Students gained hands-on experience working with diverse large language models (LLMs) such as Kimi, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini, mastered prompt engineering, and witnessed the exceptionally powerful capabilities of Harvey. Notably, students moved from concept to execution, successfully designing and customising their own GPT (bot).

Even more interesting, Natalie examined the unexpected ban of Fable 5 and its subsequent resumption in June 2026, which highlighted the unpredictable nature of export controls and the importance of resilience. The experience is further enriched by perspectives from elite professionals across Alibaba, Tencent, Google, Harvey, Johnson Stokes & Master, and King & Wood. Together, they explored the evolving metrics of legal value, the demands of AI governance, and the mindsets and skill sets that future lawyers must master today.

1.5-credit electives are open to eligible LLB, LLB Double Degree, and JD students. Two 1.5-credit courses can be combined to fulfil a full 3-credit requirement.
