[HKCML] Leuven IP and AI Conference 2026

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Commercial and Maritime Law Centre (HKCML), the Leuven IP and AI Conference 2026 is now calling for abstracts.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping creativity and innovation in ways that are yet to be fully understood. While Intellectual Property (IP) has long mediated the relationship between law and technological innovation, AI poses new challenges to established legal and regulatory approaches. The complexity and opacity of AI, as well as the pace at which it is being developed and adopted, often leaves legal scholars in a state of contemplative deferral in their analytical and normative evaluations. Against this background, the Leuven IP and AI conference 2026 – following the successful Durham 2025 first edition – aims to bring together national, European and global IP scholars and practitioners to provide a platform for advanced reflection on the latest developments in IP and AI. In particular, the conference aims to examine consolidated as well as innovative solutions to maintain a dynamic balance between rewarding creators and ensuring access to knowledge in the age of AI, and it invites reflections on how evolving IP frameworks can foster sustainable economic, cultural and technological development.

Experts from all areas of IP studies are invited to participate and discuss how AI is affecting IP’s theory, law, policy and litigation. Approaches looking at the general theory of IP, or at specific sub-fields, from both non-IP (consumer or competition law, platform regulation, fundamental rights, etc.) or non-legal (economics, philosophy, social- or computer- sciences) domains are equally invited.

The Digital Shift: Redefining Global Value Chains in a Connected World

Conference Theme: The advent of big data, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies marks our current era as one of significant digital transition. This transition presents society and the legal landscape with both unprecedented opportunities and significant challenges, particularly in the context of global value chains (GVCs). For instance, the integration of digital technologies can enhance efficiency and transparency in GVCs, but it also raises questions about data governance, intellectual property rights, and cross-border compliance. Additionally, this digital transition can interact with other policy objectives, such as sustainability, in ways that are either mutually reinforcing or competing. Regulatory approaches to digital transition and GVCs differ across countries and regions, reflecting diverse legal frameworks and priorities and highlighting the necessity to solve cross-border issues under a coordinated framework. This workshop aims to explore the complex implications of the digital transition within legal contexts, examining how laws and regulatory strategies are evolving in response to the digital shift and its impact on global value chains.
