Research Camp 2026
On 22 May 2026, the School of Law, City University of Hong Kong, held a Research Camp aimed at promoting research excellence and discussing research strategies.
The Research Camp began with a welcoming address by Prof Thomas Crofts, Associate Dean of the School of Law, and featured four major sessions:
- Staff Sharing on Grant Writing and Opportunities
- Update on Research Matters and Future Research Strategies
- Promoting and Recognising Research Excellence
- Presentation of the SLW Outstanding Research Awards 2025.

In the first session, Prof Peter Chan, Prof Lauren Lin, and Prof Martin Lai shared their experiences and suggestions on grant writing, applying for funding for empirical legal work, and the ECS application process. The session aimed to encourage greater interest in grant applications and to help faculty better understand different grant opportunities.

The second session, led by Prof Thomas Crofts and the Research Centre Directors, focused on updates on research matters and future strategies. Prof Crofts first shared updates on preparations for the upcoming RGC visit, then offered reflections on RAE 2026 and encouraged early preparation for the next RAE submission. Prof Wang Jiangyu, Director of the Centre for Chinese and Comparative Law (CCCL), and Prof Alexander Loke, Director of the Hong Kong Commercial and Maritime Law Centre (HKCML), recapitulated the work at their respective centres and shared future research strategies and upcoming events.

Prof Lin Feng, Dean of the School of Law, then spoke on the RAE criteria and highlighted the School's strategy to maximise research excellence while recognising staff contributions. A discussion followed, during which colleagues offered suggestions to make the School's processes more effective and precise.

Towards the end of the Research Camp, Prof Lin Feng presented the Outstanding Research Awards 2025. Prof Thomas Crofts received the award in the Senior Faculty category, and Prof Mandy Fang received the award in the Junior Faculty category.

The Research Camp concluded with closing remarks by Prof Thomas Crofts, who encouraged faculty in their research work and reaffirmed the School's commitment to supporting high-quality, impactful research that will position the School for future success.
