Ubaid Rehman Presents at Mini-Conference on Legal Education in a GenAI Landscape

Mr Ubaid REHMAN of the School of Law at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was an invited speaker at “LEGAL: Legal Education in a GenAI Landscape,” a mini-conference held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 8 October 2026.

Hosted on CUHK campus and supported by the University’s Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research, the half-day event examined how generative AI is reshaping the way lawyers are taught and trained. Speakers included representatives from CityUHK, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and CUHK.

Ubaid delivered a featured presentation, “From Producer to Supervisor: Rethinking Professional Formation in the Age of AI.” He argued that drafting, research and document review have traditionally served as both professional output and professional training. As AI takes on more of this foundational work, law schools must ask where professional formation will come from. His talk explored practical responses, from redesigning lectures and small-group teaching to rethinking assessment, given that a polished output is no longer reliable evidence of deep understanding. His central message was that AI does not threaten the legal profession, but rather calls for a more honest account of how lawyers develop judgment, advocacy and professional responsibility.

He then joined Mr Brian TANG (HKU) and Associate Professor Dr Stuart HARGREAVES (CUHK) on the panel “Beyond Cognitive Surrender: Reshaping Legal Education and Professional Formation in the Age of GenAI.” The discussion covered the future of assessment, the constraints regulators place on curricula, and whether experiential AI programmes risk creating a two-tier system of law graduates.
