New Student Orientation 2021

The CityU Law School Student Orientation 2021 was held in a real-time, online format on 24 August for the new LLB, JD, PCLL, LLM and LLMArbDR students. Around 450 students attended the Orientation on ZOOM. The Orientation aimed to give new students an overview of academic and university life, introduce them to the University’s resources, facilities and opportunities, and help them get prepared for their new start.

Prof TAN Cheng-Han, Dean of the Law School, first warmly welcomed the new LLB and JD students on behalf of CityU Law School. In his speech, he urged the students to go beyond just understanding the legal rules and beyond just knowing them and how to apply them. Because “law is in the service of society and communities,” he said that it is also important that students understand the underlying purpose of the rules and what the rules are trying to achieve. Prof. Tan also encouraged the students to enjoy their study and make the most out of their university life.

Afterwards, the respective programme directors welcomed their students and set out their expectations.

Later on, the new LLB and JD students were given introductions on different aspects of law school life, including international mooting and advocacy; professional development and public service; different special schemes, programmes and initiatives to take advantage of while at CityU; the CityU Law Review; the law library; the Language Centre; e-learning and counselling services. Mr Kay CHAN, the Chairman of the Alumni Association of CityU School of Law, and Ms CHAN Huen Yan, the Acting President of the City University of Hong Kong Students’ Union 32^nd Law Students’ Society Executive Committee, were invited as guest speakers to share their experiences with the students about aspects of legal practice and legal study, respectively.

The Orientation for PCLL students was held in the afternoon, and the Orientation for LLM and LLMArbDR students was held in the evening. The students were warmly welcomed by the Dean and the teaching staff. The respective programme directors then briefed the students on the programme features, curriculum, assessment, resources and facilities in the individual programme orientations.

The Student Orientation was a great success. Students got to become familiar with university life and gain information useful for their studies at CityU. Welcome all new students again to the CityU Law School!
