Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of LLMArbDR Programme

On 20 November 2025, the School of Law at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a distinguished cocktail reception to commemorate the 35th anniversary of its prestigious Master of Laws in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (LLMArbDR) programme. The event brought together over 130 esteemed guests, including judges, judicial officials, legal practitioners, esteemed faculty, proud alumni, and students, to celebrate a legacy of shaping the future of dispute resolution in Asia and beyond.

 

Distinguished guests included:

  • The Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas Au Hing-cheung, Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China;
  • The Honourable Mr. Justice Lee Hing-nin, District Judge of the HKSAR;
  • Mr. Patrick Lau Hui-ping, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council;
  • Mr. Sean Lin, Assistant District Commander (Administration) (Western District) of the Hong Kong Police Force;
  • Dr. Lester Garson Huang, SBS, JP, Co-Chairman and Partner at P. C. Woo & Co., former Chairman of the CityUHK Council, and CityUHK Honorary Doctor of Laws;
  • Mr. Roden Tong Man-lung, President of the Law Society of Hong Kong;
  • Mr. Horace Wong, SC, JP, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Arbitration at the Hong Kong Bar Association;
  • Professor Peter Malanczuk, Council Member of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, Former Dean of School of Law at CityUHK; and
  • Professor Petra Butler, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Canterbury

Also present were Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, Professor Kevin Downing, Secretary to the Council; Professor Lin Feng, Dean and Chair Professor of Basic Law at the School of Law; and Professor Christopher To, Adjunct Professor and Programme Director of the LLMArbDR programme.

The formal programme began with opening remarks from Professor Freddy Boey, who stated, "The success of the LLMArbDR programme vividly reflects Hong Kong’s dynamism. Hong Kong has become a world-class hub for commerce and legal services, and CityUHK is proud to have contributed to this journey."

 

 

The programme proceeded with a dedicated session of reflections, during which our guests of honour shared their thoughtful insights. Mr. Neil Kaplan, CBE, KC, SBS, widely regarded as “the father of Hong Kong arbitration”, and Mr. Philip Yang, Past Chairperson of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, captivated the room with heartfelt pre-recorded messages prepared exclusively for the occasion, while foundational leaders of the programme, Professor Peter Malanczuk and Professor Christopher To delivered live addresses from the stage.

Shortly after, Professor Lin Feng delivered a sincere vote of thanks on behalf of the School of Law, recognising everyone in attendance and expressing appreciation to the legal partners for their enduring support.

The second half of the evening turned the spotlight on to the living embodiment of the programme. Alumni Ms. Xie Huilun Daniella and Ms. Wang Hao shared personal anecdotes about how the LLM programme had shaped their careers, before current students Ms. Liu Lu and Mr. Chiu Yui Hang Henry offered spirited perspectives, representing the next generation ready to carry the torch forward.

The formal proceedings concluded with a powerful remark by Dr. Lester Huang. He framed the programme's success within the broader context of the university's growth and Hong Kong's strategic position, providing an inspiring conclusion to the celebrations.

Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed a curated display of faculty publications from the School of Law, a proud testament to its academic excellence. The evening drew to a close with a vibrant cocktail reception, where old friends reconnected and new connections to form, as guests celebrated a cherished shared history and a bright future ahead.

About the LLM in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (LLMArbDR) at CityUHK
Established in 1991, the LLMArbDR at the City University of Hong Kong was the first Master’s degree programme in arbitration and dispute resolution in Asia. The programme aims to develop expertise in domestic and international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region, and to foster original research in arbitration and ADR.

香港城市大學 (城大)法律學院於2025年11月20日為法學碩士(仲裁及爭議解決學)課程三十五周年舉辦慶祝酒會。此次活動匯聚逾130位來賓,包括司法機構官員、法律從業者、法學學者、傑出校友及學生, 共同慶祝該課程在爭議解決領域培養人才的成就。

城大校長及大學傑出教授梅彥昌教授、校董會秘書長唐寧教授、法律學院院長及基本法講座教授林峰教授、法學碩士(仲裁及爭議解決學)課程主任陶榮教授亦共同出席盛會。

活動以梅彥昌校長的致辭拉開序幕,他表示:「法學碩士(仲裁及爭議解決學)課程的成功展現了香港的蓬勃活力。香港已成為世界一流的商業和法律服務中心,城大很榮幸能為此做出貢獻。」

 

 

在接著的嘉賓分享環節中,特邀嘉賓們暢抒真知灼見。與會嘉賓觀看了被譽爲「香港仲裁之父」的Neil Kaplan先生和香港國際仲裁中心前主席楊良宜先生特地為活動錄製的的祝賀視頻。馬培德教授陶榮教授也分享了課程的發展歷程和未來展望。

隨後,林峰院長代表法律學院發表謝辭,向來賓致以衷心感謝,並對法律界合作夥伴的長期支持表示誠摯謝意。

活動第二部分聚焦於課程的育人成果。校友代表謝慧倫女士王好女士分享了法律學院對其職業發展的影響。學生劉露女士趙鋭恒先生則代表新一代學生,展現了傳承薪火的決心。

正式活動在黃嘉純博士的精彩致辭中落下帷幕。他將該課程的成功置於大學發展和香港戰略地位的背景下進行解讀,為慶祝活動畫下完美句號。

酒會期間,會場還展示了法律學院老師們的出版著作,展現了法律學院卓越的研究成果。與會嘉賓在輕鬆愉悅的氛圍中交流暢談,共同展望美好未來。

香港城市大學法學碩士(仲裁及爭議解決學)課程
成立於1991年,是亞洲首個仲裁及爭議解決碩士學位課程。該課程致力於培養學生在香港及亞太區仲裁及爭議解決(ADR)方面的專業技能,並推動該領域的創新性研究,為地區輸送了大量專業人才。
