Issue 21 - September 1999
A Few Words from the Editor
By Annie Yu

Welcome all to a new year of computing at the City University of Hong Kong. Many technology developments are in store that will change the way we teach and learn and perform our daily work. To meet the increasing demands, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) is gearing up for a busy year in anticipation of major computing developments. Some recent enhancements and forthcoming developments include:

  • This will be the year that PolyLink makes a big leap to become Web-based.

  • Our Network & LAN team will roll out the Office 2000 this Semester. The CSC will work hard to implement the software and provide necessary support.

  • On-going development of the CityU Intranet to incorporate users’ requests and comments.

  • The CSC will continue to improve the computing facilities in the Student Terminal Area.

  • The Year 2000 conversion project is close to completion but the CSC will continue to ensure that the University is well prepared to traverse the turn of the millennium.

  • A series of CSC Forums and Small Talks will be organised to increase users’ awareness on the newest technology. The last series of events (Sept. 98 – April 99) drew more than 900 attendees (both staff and students) from all disciplines.

  • Better dial-up services provided by the new CityLink Plus facility. A dedicated Help Desk has been set up to answer related queries.

Over the years, the CSC had tried very hard to improve the quality of services and to keep campus computing in perspective. We have also made every effort to tell the entire CityU community what the CSC has to offer through Network Computing, our quarterly newsletter. If there is anything you wish to share with us, please feel free to drop us a note at ccnetcom@cityu.edu.hk. Knowing your thoughts and comments about us is the only way we can improve ourselves. Until next time, have fun reading!
