Hugo Poon Sheung-hei fell in love with table tennis as a child, captivated by the unique sounds and incredible spins on the ball. He started training in his early years. In his first official match, he played against a seeded player and triumphed against the odds, igniting a lifelong passion for the sport.

Choosing City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was a natural decision for Hugo because of the University’s exceptional support for student-athletes. He benefited from generous scholarships and overseas training subsidies, which allowed him to sharpen his skills and gain international experience. The strong academic support also enabled him to effectively balance sports and studies.

As the captain of CityUHK’s men’s table tennis team, Hugo led the team to five consecutive championships at the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK) Table Tennis Championships from the 2014 to 2019 seasons. He attributed their success to dedicated training, strong team spirit and expert coaching from Dr Wong Choi-ki, who had a profound impact on him. Hugo recalls that after a disappointing match, Dr Wong shared her own setbacks and encouraged him to learn from challenges with a positive mindset. This lesson shaped his approach to competition and has guided him through life’s ups and downs.

Hugo’s academic journey has been equally impressive. Beginning with a degree in Materials Engineering, he developed a keen interest in surveying during an internship. Recognising the value of interdisciplinary knowledge, he pursued a second bachelor’s degree in surveying, fully funded by a scholarship. This dual expertise enabled him to integrate engineering principles with surveying techniques, resulting in a more comprehensive understanding of the built environment.

As a Green Building Young Leader with the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Hugo actively promotes green building awareness across Hong Kong, particularly among students. He educates them about sustainable design, energy efficiency and the importance of environmentally friendly construction practices, hoping to inspire meaningful change that benefits future generations.

Hugo has also maintained a meaningful connection with his alma mater, especially in his role as a Green Building Young Leader. He is dedicated to fostering closer partnerships by organising educational activities that inspire students to become future leaders in sustainable design and construction. One of his upcoming initiatives is a comprehensive green building site visit for students, showcasing real-world applications of green building strategies and technologies.

Hugo lives by the motto, “Do our best, no regrets”. This guiding principle motivates him to live intentionally and value each moment. Doing our best in everything we undertake helps build a sense of fulfilment and integrity, he says.
