The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCC), in collaboration with industry partners in Nansha, Guangzhou, organised its inaugural swine husbandry extramural study placement for Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) students in May–June 2025. This program provided BVM students with firsthand exposure to advanced pig farming practices, equipping them with essential skills for their future careers.
Unlike the small-scale farms commonly found in Hong Kong, the Nansha facility is a vertically integrated operation that produces approximately 350,000 pigs annually. The 17-floor, fully enclosed farm utilises automated feeding systems and features specialized zones for breeding, farrowing, and piglet rearing, showcasing the future of efficient, technology-driven livestock production.
For aspiring veterinarians, understanding large-scale animal production is critical. With Hong Kong’s limited exposure to large-scale farming, this placement in Nansha offered BVM students a unique opportunity to:
- Observe best practices in swine husbandry and nutrition
- Learn proper animal handling and welfare techniques
- Gain insights into breeding protocols and farm management strategies
This initiative marks a significant milestone in JCC’s partnership with Nansha, underscoring the college’s dedication to integrating real-world experience into veterinary training. By engaging with cutting-edge agricultural technologies, students developed a deeper understanding of modern livestock production, preparing them to meet the evolving demands of the profession. JCC extends its sincere thanks to our Nansha piggery partner for hosting the students and enabling this invaluable learning experience. The college looks forward to expanding this collaboration and continuing to provide students with exceptional training opportunities in veterinary medicine.
