Adaptable Design in Industrial Metaverse Era

Abstract

As next generation of internet development, Metaverse has generated significant interests mainly from entertainment and virtual communication as well as xR/AR/VR/MR industries. In comparison, little interests have been shown from academic and scholarly communities. As the investments in Metaverse development increase, it is expected that the Industrial Metaverse will be emerged, which can be utilized for advanced design and intelligent manufacturing. This seminar will be focused on Adaptable Design (AD)methods, tools and applications. The possible benefits of AD for long-term major engineering systems in an Industrial Metaverse environment will be discussed along with Digital Twins, Industrial Internet of Things and other advanced technologies.

About the Speaker

Peihua Gu is currently President of International Institute for Innovative Design and Intelligent Manufacturing of Tianjin University, Zhejiang, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Executive Director of Center for Emerging Engineering Education Research and Application, Tianjin University. He was Provost and Vice-President (Academic) of Shantou University. Prior to returning to China in 2005, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the University of Calgary, Canada.

Professor Gu is an elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (2004) and Fellow of CIRP (2004). He was awarded Changjiang Scholar (Cheng Kong Scholar) by Ministry of Education China and a recipient of Leading Talent of Guangdong Province. He was twice awarded Industrial Research and Design Chair by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He received various awards and honours in recognizing his contributions in research and education.

His main research contributions include the establishment of Adaptable Design Method, invention of Multi-material and Multi-source Deposition Method and various techniques in intelligent manufacturing. Professor Gu is an author and co-author of over 300 technical publications and has been listed as Highly Cited Chinese Researchers since the commencement of the listing by ELSEVIER and Top 2% Scientists in the World published by Stanford University.
