New Student Orientation 2022
The CityU Law School Student Orientation 2022 was held in a real-time, online format on 23 August for the new LLB, LLB&BBAAC, JD, PCLL, LLM and LLMArbDR students. More than 700 students attended the Orientation on ZOOM. The Orientation aimed to give new students an overview of academic and university life; introduce them to the University’s resources, facilities and opportunities; and help them get prepared for their new journey.
Prof LIN Feng, Acting Dean of the Law School, first warmly welcomed the new LLB, LLB&BBAAC and JD freshmen on behalf of CityU Law School. In his speech, he gave three pieces of advice to the new students. First, “Don’t take any views expressed in books, in media or even by professors for granted”—Prof Lin advised the freshmen to be critical. Second, he encouraged the new students to be interdisciplinary; especially for LLB students, he suggested that they study another discipline, because another discipline may offer a different angle for understanding law. Third, he reminded the newcomers to be prepared for their classes and to ask teachers questions if they do not understand the course material.
Afterwards, the respective programme directors welcomed their students and set out their expectations.
Later on, the new LLB, LLB&BBAAC and JD freshmen were given introductions on different aspects of law school life, including international mooting and advocacy; professional development and public service; different special schemes, programmes and initiatives to take advantage of while at CityU; the CityU Law Review; the law library; the Language Centre; e-learning; and counselling services. Mr Kay CHAN, the Chairman of the Alumni Association of CityU School of Law, and Ms Catherine MUNG, the Acting President of the City University of Hong Kong Students’ Union 33rd Law Students’ Society Provisional Executive Committee, were invited as guest speakers to share their experiences with the students about aspects of legal practice and legal study, respectively.
The Orientation for PCLL students was held in the afternoon, and the Orientation for LLM and LLMArbDR students was held in the evening. The students were warmly welcomed by the Acting Dean and teaching staff. The respective programme directors then briefed the students on the programme features, curriculum, assessment, resources and facilities in the individual programme orientations.
The Student Orientation was a great success. Students got to become familiar with university life and gain useful information for their studies at CityU. We again welcome all new students to the CityU Law School!
香港城市大學(城大)法律學院於2022年8月23日舉行網上迎新日，超過700名新入學的法律本科生及碩士生參加。一系列的迎新活動旨在讓新生認識大學學習和生活的概況，了解大學的教學資源和設施，幫助他們適應校園生活。
法律學院署理院長林峰教授首先代表城大法律學院熱烈歡迎一眾新生。在講話中，他向新生提出了三點建議。第一，林教授建議新生要持批判性思考能力。他寄語學生：「不要把書中、媒體上、甚至教授的任何觀點視為理所當然。」第二，他鼓勵新生要有跨學科思維，特別是對於法律學學士課程的學生，林教授建議他們多學習一門學科，以從不同的角度理解法律。第三，他提醒新生要做好課前準備，不恥下問。之後，法律學學士課程和法律博士課程的課程主任歡迎各位新生，並對他們提出期望。
隨後，學院教職員為新生詳細介紹了大學及學院的資源，包括國際模擬法庭比賽和辯論訓練、專業發展及公共服務指導、學生在城大期間可參與的計劃及項目、《香港城市大學法律評論》期刊、法學圖書館、語言中心、網上學習和心理輔導服務。香港城市大學法律學院校友會主席陳國維大律師和香港城市大學學生會第33屆法律學生會臨時執行委員會代理主席孟映彤同學被邀作嘉賓，他們分別與同學們分享了他們在法律工作和學習方面的寶貴經驗。
法學專業證書課程學生的迎新活動在下午舉行；法學碩士課程和仲裁及爭議解決學法學碩士課程的學生則安排在晚間進行迎新活動。署理院長林教授和教職員分別歡迎了一眾新生。接著，各自的課程主任向學生簡要介紹了相關課程的學科特點、課程設計、評分方法、教學資源等等。
2022新生迎新日圓滿結束。通過一系列的迎新活動，新生們對大學生活加深初步認識，並取得了對學習有用的資訊。再次歡迎同學們加入城大法律學院！
