New WOAH Guidelines for HPAI Surveillance in smallholder poultry systems

We are pleased to announce the publication of the official World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) guidelines for the "Surveillance of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) for Smallholder Poultry Systems in Resource-Limited Settings".

Externship at the University of Georgia's Poultry Diagnostic and Research Centre (PDRC)

In September 2025, our Junior Poultry Veterinarian at the OHRP, Dr CHU Yu Kwan Tiffany, had the opportunity to complete a three-week externship at the University of Georgia’s Poultry Diagnostic and Research Centre (PDRC) for professional development. 

Early Career Researcher event

The International Veterinary Vaccinology Network hosted their Early Career Researcher event in Vienna, where fellows from the IVVN Career Development Fellowship Scheme and the Plowright One Health Mentoring Scheme, as well as Professor Dirk Pfeiffer, got together in an engaging 2-day programme.

New Research on Live Bird Shops (LBSs) and markets (LBMs) in Gujarat, India

Sara C. Sequeira, from the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University, alongside other researchers including Professor Dirk Pfeiffer and Anne Conan, published the paper “A risk-based framework for live bird shops (LBSs) in Gujarat, India: Identifying pathogen entry and exposure risk profiles” in the journal Preventive Veterinary Medicine.

Our recently graduate Theethawat Uea-Anuwong published his research titled "Impact of Temperature-Humidity Index on Heat Stress Behavior and Welfare of Battery-Caged Yellow-Feathered Native Broilers During Summertime in Hong Kong: An Observational Study".

Detection of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in peridomestic Rattus norvegicus in Hong Kong

A study conducted in Hong Kong by Theethawat Uea-Anuwong, PhD student from City University of Hong Kong and member of the Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice alongside other researchers, identified a 2.8% prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira among 250 peridomestic rats. Four rat species were analyzed, revealing Leptospira interrogans and L. borgpetersenii only in R. norvegicus. N

Developing WOAH guidelines for African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccines: field evaluation and post-vaccination monitoring

For many years, the control of ASF has been limited by the lack of an effective vaccine. While promising modified live virus vaccine candidates are now undergoing field testing or approval in several countries, and many are in development, there is a lack of a standardized framework for evaluating these vaccines in real-world settings.
