The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCC) proudly held its Commencement on 15 June 2026, bringing together graduates, families, and distinguished guests in a celebration of academic excellence.

The ceremony opened with a formal academic procession, followed by the National Anthem and the official declaration by the Presiding Officer, Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, Chairman of the Council of City University of Hong Kong.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of Dr. the Honourable Leung Chun-ying, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, who delivered a distinguished address as Guest of Honour. His speech offered profound reflections and words of wisdom, inspiring graduates as they embark on their professional journeys. Highlighting the One Health principle, he emphasised the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, and encouraged graduates to pursue impactful careers beyond traditional boundaries and geographical limits.

Professor Vanessa Barrs, Dean of JCC, congratulated the Class of 2026 and encouraged them to uphold professionalism, compassion, and lifelong learning. She also noted that their education has equipped them with transferable skills to address global challenges, guided by JCC’s core pillars of One Health, food safety and security, and animal welfare.

A key highlight was the presentation of graduates from the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Master’s, and PhD programmes, each crossing the stage in a proud milestone. The BVM graduates also solemnly recited the Veterinarian’s Oath, affirming their commitment to ethical practice and animal welfare.

The ceremony also celebrated excellence in teaching with the presentation of the Teaching Excellence Award to Professor Santiago Alonso Sousa from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Recognised for his pioneering work in integrating artificial intelligence and innovative pedagogies into veterinary education, Professor Alonso Sousa exemplifies the College’s commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching.

As the ceremony concluded, the Class of 2026 joined the JCC alumni community, ready to make meaningful contributions to veterinary medicine, public health, and life sciences.
