The City University of Hong Kong has invested $25 million to set up the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CityU VDL), which is one of the most comprehensive and advanced veterinary diagnostic laboratories currently in Asia.


Profs Sophie St-Hilaire, Dirk Pfeiffer, and Michael Reichel from the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences visited the Shenzhen Aquatic Animal Diseases Laboratory run by the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau of the People’s Republic of China (SZCIQ).


Question: What similarities do Hong Kong and Greenland have? Answer: They both have red and white flags, neither has much by way of livestock, and that’s about it.

Prof. Michael Reichel (Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences) recently published an article in the Australian Veterinary Journal titled ‘An international accredited veterinary school for Hong Kong’.


A $500-million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (the Trust) to City University of Hong Kong (CityU) will be used to build a top-notch facility for One Health in Hong Kong. It is the largest single donation received by the University in its 33-year history.


The article ‘Open standing castration in Thoroughbred racehorses in Hong Kong: Prevalence and severity of complications 30 days post-castration’ by Dr Rosanowski (Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health) et al. has been selected by the Clinical Reviewer of the Equine Veterinary Journal as one of the most clinically relevant to appear on its Early View section this month. The Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ) is widely acclaimed as the strongest international equine science journal and boasts a strong global readership.



Prof. Dirk Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health) recently attended the ‘International Seminar of Veterinary Epidemiology Development & the 3rd Regional Meeting to Support and Sustain Veterinary Epidemiology Capacity’ on 26-28 September 2017, Qingdao, P.R. China.


The Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice welcomed two new staff members recently.

Dr. Fiona Kong joined the Centre as a Research Fellow. She has a PhD in Public Health/Epidemiology from the University of Queensland and her main interest is in infectious disease epidemiology, especially emerging zoonotic diseases.
