Knowing how to perform life-saving surgery is a huge asset to every practitioner. Good pre-op preparation, optimal anaesthetic techniques, choice of sutures, wound care and effective post-operative care, all contribute to surgical success and good outcomes for the patient.
In the two day workshop, Dr Tom Edwards and Dr Jacque Parker, will teach you how to perform life-saving techniques such as gastropexy, splenectomy and diaphragmatic hernia repair, and also instruct you in pertinent topics that contribute to surgical success.

Dr Tom Edwards, DVM, DACVECC
Dr Tom Edwards, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency medicine and critical care, has practiced small animal emergency medicine at a number of emergency veterinary practices since graduating as a veterinarian. After completing a three-year residency at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Edwards successfully qualified as a specialist. He is no stranger to Hong Kong, having conducted a very successful workshop in emergency medicine at CityU in 2015. He currently serves in the U.S. Army’s Veterinary Corps and is the chief of veterinary medicine in Okinawa, Japan.
Dr Jacquelyn Parker, DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr Jacque Parker, a board-certified specialist in veterinary surgery is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Veterinary Corps and is currently stationed in San Diego. She qualified as a specialist surgeon in 2009, having undergone a residency at Colorado State University. She has held several posts within the US Army Veterinary Corps over the last 15 years including that of Commander of Public Health Activity (San Diego) and Director of the Dog Centre Europe (Germany).

Time to Act: Decisions for Emergency Surgery
On the 25th and 26th of January, 22 Hong Kong veterinarians and 10 veterinarians from overseas gathered together at CityU to participate in an Emergency Surgery workshop. Dr Tom Edwards and Dr Jacque Parker, both from the US army veterinary corps, engaged in an interactive workshop, aimed at teaching the principles of emergency surgery. The lectures covered all topics involved in emergency surgery including the pre-op and post-op care of critical patients. A couple of guest lecturers provided valuable insight into the anaesthesia of a critical patient and the art of surgical biopsy taking.
The second day of the workshop, being the practical session, was a long and intensive day, where participants watched various techniques being demonstrated and then had the opportunity to practice these techniques themselves, with the tutors close at hand to offer their expert assistance.
SVM is proud to have hosted several overseas participants in the workshop (6 from Thailand, 1 from UK, 1 from China, 2 from Singapore). We thank the speakers for their time and assistance, and look forward to seeing all of you at the next CPE event.
