Moving CSC Student Terminal Area from Academic 1 (AC1) to Academic 2 (AC2)

by Joe Lee

The CSC Student Terminal Area (STA) has been located on Level 2, AC1 (previously named Academic Building) since 1990 when the University moved from the Mongkok campus to the current permanent campus in Kowloon Tong.  The STA had undergone a few changes over the years before it arrives at its final shape.  However, the existing STA will be moved when Semester A, 2012-13 starts in September 2012.  In order to free up the space occupied by the STA for other purposes, all Teaching Studios, computing facilities and services (except the Data Centre and offices for support staff who must have instant access to the Data Centre) will be moved to the 4th  and 5th floor of the AC2 building.

The whole removal process includes many critical tasks that require substantial coordinated efforts.  The most critical one is to determine the quantity and capacity of Teaching Studios to be provided in AC2 based on teaching requirements and timetabling simulations.  When the Academic Regulations and Records Office (ARRO) has obtained a satisfactory timetable according to the teaching requirements submitted by academic departments for Semester A, 2012-13, the Campus Development and Facilities Office (CDFO) must provide sufficient rooms and monitor the renovation work such as merging smaller rooms to form larger rooms, re-cabling for power and network, installation of audio/visual equipment, creation of the new Service Counter for user support and so on.  The work on the 4th floor started in mid-May right after the examination period and is expected to complete in mid-July.  When the rooms are ready, most computing facilities will be moved from AC1 to AC2.

Apart from the above newly built rooms, the computers in five of the existing teaching rooms on the 5th floor will be replaced with those in AC1 to boost their performances.  Computers and accessories will be dismantled in AC1, transferred to AC2, unpacked and installed, and finally updated with new system images. As the demand on Teaching Studios for teaching and learning is low in the Summer Term, the computer replacement process which started in early-June was expected to complete by the end of June.

If the renovation work on the 4th floor runs smoothly and on schedule, the new Service Counter for providing technical service and daily notebook loan service will be set up in mid-July.  Hopefully, the entire Service Counter will be moved to AC2 by the end of July.  As the competition for computing resources among students is anticipated to be keen in academic year 2012-13, around 300 more notebook computers will be added to the current loan pool giving a total of more than 900 notebook computers for daily loan.

All other facilities such as document scanners, optical mark scanners, Express Terminals and fast printers will also be distributed between the two floors.

The following table briefly describes the removal schedule as planned at the time this article was written and will be adjusted to accommodate changes in teaching needs:
