The Department of English at City University of Hong Kong is seeking applications from outstanding scholars who have research and teaching interests in the field of English Applied Linguistics. The successful applicant will have an excellent publication record and research profile, which will contribute to the Department of English’s particular research strengths in applied linguistics, which include educational linguistics; discourse analysis; professional communication; healthcare communication; and multimodality, interactivity, and digital technology. The successful applicant will also be expected to make a significant contribution in a leadership and mentoring capacity as a senior member of a department with productive and motivated colleagues, build new research initiatives, and contribute to curriculum development.

For 35 years, the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong has been a leader in professional communication, applied linguistics and English language education while developing cutting-edge research in emergent fields in sociolinguistics and digital literacies. Our faculty frequently publish articles in top-tier international periodicals, underpinning outreach activities that produce demonstrable beneficial impact on society, and are named among the Stanford University list of the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists. As an integral constituent of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of English contributes discipline-specific knowledge and a valuable humanities perspective to interdisciplinary research clusters that address some of the most complex global challenges facing humanity in the 21st century.

Duties

Faculty are expected to conduct research that is internationally excellent, to publish and promote their research, to secure research funding, and to pursue engagement activities leading to societal impact. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of research publications commensurate with the seniority of the position and will be able to contribute to the development of areas of research strength in the Department of English, which include educational linguistics; professional communication; healthcare communication; discourse analysis; and multimodality, interactivity, and digital technology. They will make a significant contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervising research students, and possess the ability to develop innovative discovery-enriched teaching. The successful candidate will also demonstrate proven experience of academic leadership and a readiness to engage in mentoring and administrative responsibilities that are appropriate to a senior role within the Department.

Requirements

Candidates for Professor should have a portfolio of outstanding contributions to their field of scholarship (including publications and grant capture), a strong teaching record, and a strong record of leadership in research and academic professional service. 

Candidates for Associate Professor should have a strong record of internationally excellent contributions to their field of scholarship (including publications and grant capture), a strong teaching record, as well as evidence of significant contributions to academic and professional development.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and individual performance.  Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable). Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
