Research Assistant in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health (Appointment for 12 months with possibility of extension) [Ref. C/R/539/09]

Project

Airborne Microbial Contamination in Hong Kong Chicken and Pig farms

This project aims to characterise the microorganisms in the environment of local pig and chicken farms using a metagenomics approach complemented by traditional molecular methods. The results of this research will inform future interventions to improve animal health.

Duties

  1. Assisting with the overall project administration and logistic arrangement;
  2. Organising and executing sample collection (on-farm);
  3. Developing and executing laboratory protocols, such as nucleic acid extraction, molecular assays, and serological assays;
  4. Reviewing and analysing data;
  5. Assisting in writing manuscripts; and
  6. Adapting to various research needs and undertaking additional tasks as directed.

The appointee will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Prof. Priscilla GERBER, and other research team members to execute the tasks above.

Requirements

A Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Veterinary or related fields, with no more than 6 years of service at the University. Hands-on experience in a laboratory setting and proficiency in molecular biology techniques are essential. Strong written and spoken English communication skills; the ability to work effectively within a team; attention to details; good record keeping; and willingness to respond to challenges and acquire new skills are required. Fluency in Chinese would be considered an advantage but not essential. Familiarity with farm animals is desirable.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
