Research Associate/Postdoc in the Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice (Appointment for 12 months with possibility of extension) [Ref. C/R/468/09]

Introduction of Advanced Health Management Tools for Enhanced Pig Production, Product Safety and Quality in Hong Kong

The research project focuses on molecular epidemiology and monitoring the prevalence of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and other swine viruses in Hong Kong using next-generation sequencing technology.  The position offers an opportunity for highly motivated, enthusiastic candidates with a strong background in molecular cell biology, molecular virology, biochemistry, and/or a related field to advance their training under the direction of Prof. Dirk U. Pfeiffer and Dr. Yun Young Go.

Duties

  1. Monitor the prevalence of swine viral diseases that negatively impact the local swine industry;
  2. Determine the genotypic variation among swine viruses using next-generation sequencing (NGS);
  3. Prepare, collect, and maintain research project documentation and data; and
  4. Prepare external presentations, reports, and the publication of manuscripts.


Requirements

A PhD in Microbiology/Virology/Molecular Biology/Cell Biology or related disciplines with exemplary laboratory, analytical, and communication skills plus at least 3 years’ relevant research experience after the award of a PhD degree.  Good command of written and spoken English; strong organisational and interpersonal skills; being self-motivated and a good team player; and ability to carry out research independently are required.  Candidates with research experience in virology and/or bioinformatics interested in viral pathogens are strongly encouraged to apply.  Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology methodologies, including purification of nucleic acids, PCR, and cloning of DNA, viral genome sequencing (Sanger, NGS, TGS), and bioinformatic analysis would be advantages.

Candidates with a PhD degree with no more than 3 years’ relevant research experience after the award of a PhD degree may be considered for appointment as Postdoc.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
