Director (Indra and Harry Banga Gallery) [Ref. D/318/09]

The Indra and Harry Banga Gallery supports the University’s vision to excel in research and professional education through artistic, innovative, technology-rich and cross-disciplinary exhibitions that engage with the community.  The Gallery embraces the “Art Tech” movement and uniquely combines new media with cultural artifacts, creates an immersive, distinct, experiential environment for each exhibition, and bridges traditional cultural divides.

Duties

Reporting to the Vice-President (Development and External Relations), the appointee is expected to:

  1. Oversee the Gallery in providing strategic planning, long-term development and administrative leadership to realize its vision;
  2. Initiate strategies to develop international collaborations with major cultural institutions and to draw on different disciplines within the University to establish CityU as a leader in the museum world, both within and outside Hong Kong, distinguished by the creative use of new media designs exhibiting innovative, cross-disciplinary contents that bring together the traditional and the modern, the East and the West; and
  3. Diversify the Gallery’s current programming to further enhance local community outreach and engagement.


Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or above in art history, museum studies or related fields;
  2. Substantial managerial experience at directorate/senior level with strong track record in leading or managing a museum or gallery of comparable scale, preferably in a university or higher education setting;
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of professional museum standards/procedures and excellent networks with galleries/museums;
  4. Ability to engage donors/supporters and apply for funding from various agencies supporting Art Tech and other exhibition work;
  5. Ability to work productively in a culturally diverse community; and
  6. A dynamic personality, excellent communication (both spoken and written) and interpersonal skills, and outstanding organizational ability are required.


Candidates with less experience may be considered for appointment as Associate Director.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
