Assistant Librarian I (Law & Reference) in Library [Ref. B/632/09]

 

The Run Run Shaw Library of City University of Hong Kong is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and self-motivated professional to provide a range of user-oriented subject services to support teaching, learning and research activities of the University community in a dynamic academic environment.

Duties

The appointee will report to the Head of Information & Reference as a subject liaison librarian for the School of Law and other designated academic departments/programmes, and work closely with faculty and students to support the University's teaching, learning, and research needs.  S/he will also collaborate with other librarians to plan, develop, deliver and assess library instruction and reference services.  Main duties include to :

  1. Deliver face-to-face and online information literacy instructions across multiple disciplines (including Law in particular) to the University community;
  2. Collaborate with faculty to develop course-related instructions and integrate information literacy components into the curriculum;
  3. Develop print and online instructional materials as well as learning objects (including handouts, guides, tutorials, and other materials) as needed;
  4. Provide reference consultation to a diverse group of library users with appropriate print and electronic resources in physical and virtual environment;
  5. Work closely with other sections concerned to provide research support to faculty members (including advice and training related to citation analysis tools, open access, research impact measurement and other areas of scholarly communication);
  6. Participate in the Library Collection Development Working Group in reviewing and evaluating Library resources for Law and other designated subject areas;
  7. Liaise and communicate closely with the School of Law and the designated departments to address their collection and service needs;
  8. Perform teaching or other assigned duties in the evenings and/or weekends as needed; and
  9. Perform any other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree plus a postgraduate qualification in Information Science/Library Science, or related disciplines, and a track record of good academic performance;
  2. Good knowledge of the Law subject discipline and legal research resources;
  3. At least 12 years’ solid managerial/specialist experience after the first degree, preferably in reference and research support services of an academic library setting;
  4. At least 2 years’ working experience at the level of Assistant Librarian II with supervisory role;
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English and Chinese;
  6. Demonstrable professionalism with strong motivation, flexibility, commitment, and good planning and organisational skills; and
  7. Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and collegially with colleagues.
  8. Working experience in library instructional design and delivery in academic settings, familiarity with current instructional technologies and social networking, strong technical skills in developing course modules and other online learning objects, legal training or experiences in law libraries/legal firms and understanding of trends in research and scholarly communication are preferred.


Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a written test and interview.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
