The Jockey Club College (JCC) of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences has an ambitious goal to establish a world-class Equine and Biobank in Hong Kong and the region. The JCC Equine Biobank will serve as an extensive database for the study of equine health and disease providing biospecimens and associated data to researchers while recognizing the interconnection between people, horses, and the shared environment within the One Health/One Welfare concept. The Biobank will support cutting-edge research leading to significant advances in Equine Health and Welfare with the future advent of safe and novel therapies for common diseases in horses. Once established, the equine biobank will be expanded to include other animal species. This position is supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club offering access to a large database of samples, specimens and patient health information required for basic and clinical research. We aim to improve the quality of life of horses by producing high impact research bringing evidence-based solutions to address major health and welfare problems in Hong Kong and beyond. Generous start-up grant and administrative support will be offered for the appointee. Clinical work may be negotiable depending on the interests of the appointee.
The position will be appointed on the tenure track.
The appointee is expected to establish a leading independent research programme advancing equine health and welfare and contribute to the missions of the VCS and JCC; this will include training of undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme and of postgraduates in related disciplines, acquiring extramural research funding, delivering outstanding research achievements with strong evidence of international recognition and leadership in the field. The successful candidate will collaborate with academic services and provide leadership in the College and/or the Department. Teaching and service duties are expected to contribute to the mission of VCS.
The appointee will have a Bachelor's or Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine (e.g. BVM or DVM), a PhD and/or a Diploma (or Fellowship) from an American, European or Australia/New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in equine internal medicine or surgery or sports medicine, or in anatomic pathology or clinical pathology. A veterinary qualification recognized for registration as a veterinary surgeon by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong is required. Experience in stem cell research would be an asset but applications are welcomed for candidates with expertise in other research areas including genetics, immunology, microbiology, biomedical science, bioinformatics, ‘omics and clinical sciences. Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience in research administration and project management are required.
