Dear Colleagues, The start of a new semester warrants some forward planning. Let me briefly lay out for you what I perceive to be the major issues facing the University in the next few months. All these issues require priority attention from my senior colleagues and me, with your understanding and support.

"Snack DIY" and "Hong Kong Grocery Store" unlikely titles of prize-winning websites? CityU participants in RTH's Third Multimedia and Creativity Gallery¡XAsian Inter-University Multimedia Design Competition impressed the judging panel with these themes. And the producers of the two websites walked away with the Championship and My Favourite Award, respectively, in August.

Over 1,000 alumni, their families, students and staff attended the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall for Caring Night on 1 September. More than a homecoming gathering, the event marked the launch of two initiatives-the Alumni Ambassadors Scheme and Alumni Giving Club -- to realize the twin goals of "Caring by serving." and "Caring by Giving".

CityU opened its classroom doors to kids this summer, from 11 to 22 August, offering a Mini-U summer certificate programme for Primary Three to Primary Six students. The programme, organized by CityU Professional Services Ltd (CPS) and WiseNet Co, a Hong Kong-based education services company, attracted more than 50 children, aged 8 to 12, who enjoyed their first taste of university life on the CityU campus.

Officially opening this month, the Applied Research Gallery and the Patent Database offers the business community one-stop access to CityU's latest technologies and know-how. The Applied Research Gallery, initiated by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), features an array of applied research work. This is another way TTO aims to promote technology transfer to industrial and business communities and seek collaboration opportunities.

"Each city needs its own cultural positioning," Visiting Professor Dr Lung Yingtai, an influential Chinese writer of international stature and former Director of Taipei's Cultural Affairs Bureau, said. "Culture is not just about dancing and singing. It is an industry that forms an important part of a country's overall strength," she told more than 20 reporters in a press conference held at CityU, 27 August.

A base station antenna project presented by Mr Steven Yang at the Institution of Electrical Engineers in Hong Kong (IEE) in the Young Members Section (YMS), on 27 July, has won him the championship in the undergraduate category. Other CityU students who received prizes in the event include Mr Liu Yang Fan and Mr Kenji Yum, who clinched the championship in the postgraduate division with their group project on compact microstrip resonant cells. Mr Francis Kwong was the first runner-up.

To move ahead in a career, one must learn and apply interpersonal and communication skills, in addition to proper job training. This is one of the gems of advice two CityU alumni gave to some 2,050 new students attending the University Welcoming Ceremony with a "building self-confidence" theme, held in the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall, 25 and 26 August.

Advances in Wireless Communication, a forum held on 21 August, was the first in a series of six technology forums organized by CityU's Technology Transfer Office (TTO) to exhibit the University's strengths in applied research. There was an overwhelming response with 170 participants, ranging from industry pros to students, keen to learn the latest technological know-how and explore opportunities for collaboration.
