In his distinguished lecture on 10 November, Professor Andrew Yao Chi-chih, the recipient of CityU's Honorary Doctor of Science Degree at its 18th Congregation, treated his audience of over 220 faculty members and students to an interesting talk on the use of computer theory as an elegant and powerful tool for solving intellectual scientific challenges.

A new, fast-track, graduate-entry Juris Doctor (JD) programme and a restructured four-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme for the 2004-05 academic year have been launched. These initiatives answer recommendations raised in a 2001 report on legal education reform in Hong Kong and cater to growing aspirations among non-law graduates to enter the legal profession.

Two days of contention and solid deliberation by an international panel of judges ended on a high note as four victors emerged from the fray. Altogether, 37 parties from among internationally renowned designers and postgraduate design institutions had been invited to participate in the Shaw Prize International Design Competition, and entries rushed in from around the globe, including Britain, Germany, Japan, and the United States.

A hundred students and staff packed the Screening Room of the School of Creative Media (SCM) in the evening of 22 October. They were watching Night Corridor, an independent movie directed by SCM Assistant Professor Mr Julian Lee.

The summer of 2003 proved to be very rewarding for 40 Associate Degree students who participated in a nine-week career exposure programme that placed them in organizations such as the Society of Boys' Centre, Hong Kong Student Aid Society, and Princess Margaret Hospital. Most experiencing full-time work for the first time, the students found the programme an eye-opening in terms of career and personal development.
