Mr. Victor Kwong, General Manager – Corporate Sustainability, Towngas, shared with the SEE community the Towngas ESG and Decarbonisation Strategy. He also went into details of Towngas’ signature waste-to-energy projects, including three different landfill gas utilization projects in Hong Kong, food waste and green waste treatment facilities in Suzhou, and the Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil Plant (from POME and UCO) in Zhangjiagang, etc. The talk was very well received.

According to metrics compiled by Stanford University, over 140 CityU faculty members are listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists, reflecting the high academic standard of our faculty and our excellent research performance. Among them, six SEE faculty members are recognised on the list of Top Scientists (Top 2% in the world in their own areas of specialty). They are (in alphabetical order) Prof.

Prof Alex Jen
Under a joint appointment with Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and Department of Chemistry (CHEM), Prof. Alex Jen, Lee Shau-Kee Chair Professor (Materials Science) and Chair Professor, Chemistry and Materials Science, has recently joined SEE as a Chair Professor. MSE will continue to be his home academic unit.

SEE spares no effort to enhance teaching and learning. With the online teaching getting more popular, SEE faculty members conducted a sharing session to discuss the good practices and experiences in online teaching on 18 February 2021. The session served as an excellent platform for participants to share insights, as well as to pick up new thoughts.

Dr. Patrick Lee, Associate Professor and Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), has recently been awarded The President’s Award for the year 2020. This award recognises the awardees’ exemplary contributions to research and professional education. Only two awards were given in each academic rank of faculty members. Congratulations to the exceptional achievements of Dr. Lee.

Dr. Yun Hau Ng, Associate Professor, in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, has developed a new photocatalyst which can produce methane fuel (CH4) selectively and effectively from carbon dioxide using sunlight.

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) is pleased to announce that our MSc in Energy and Environment Programme has been accredited by The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) for a period of five years starting from September 2016 until 2021, in addition to the current accreditation by the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM).

Dr. Lin Zhang, Assistant Professor of SEE, was invited by Prof. Michael Pollitt, Vice President of International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) and professor of Business Economics at the University of Cambridge, to join the IAEE Strategic Committee for Publications. Dr. Zhang will lead the working group on reviewing the development of the Energy Journal, the flagship journal of the association since 1980.
