Since its establishment in 2000, CityU's Institute of Chinese Linguistics (ICL) has undertaken a number of research projects utilizing the collective expertise of the staff associated with the institute. One of these projects involves research in the specific context of Chinese language mediated e-commerce. Dr Matthew Lee, Head of the Department of Information Systems (IS), is working with colleagues from the ICL on this groundbreaking project.

A Website Management Programme for students in the Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree in Language Information Science, offered by CityU's Department of Chinese,Translation and Linguistics, is proving a great success, with student participation now including a large number of students from all three years. The programme is run by Dr Jonathan Webster, Acting Head of CityU's Department of English and Communication.

In another milestone in its development, CityU is the first local institution of higher education to foster a technology company from start-up to public listing. TeleEye Holdings Ltd plans to make a public offer and placing of 50 million new shares, representing 27.8% of the shareholding, on Hong Kong's Growth Enterprise Market. Of the total, 42 million shares are earmarked for a placing and eight million shares will be offered for public subscription.

And this is probably why the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities in the US jointly sponsored the establishment of the Electronic Meta-structure for Endangered Language Data Project (EMELD) a few months ago.
