Naming of Yue Hwa Lecture Theatre

Lecture Theatre 1503 in the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been named “Yue Hwa Lecture Theatre” in appreciation of the generous donations to the University made by Dr Yu Kwok-chun and Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium Limited (Yue Hwa).

Dr Yu is the Chairman of Yue Hwa and an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration of CityU.

The naming ceremony on 5 December was officiated by Dr Yu; Professor Li Lu, Director General of the Education, Science & Technology Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Yu Pang-chun, Director and General Manager of Yue Hwa; Mr Lee Yun-kee, Director and Deputy General Manager; Ms Yu Siu-chun, Director and Manager; Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman of CityU; Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU; and Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations).

The ceremony was attended by Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, Provost of CityU; Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration); Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations); and board members and staff of Yue Hwa.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Hu expressed his gratitude to Dr Yu, praising him for pursuing innovation and injecting new elements into his emporium as a means to diversify his business. Mr Hu also expressed respect for Dr Yu’s dedication to upholding the principle that “we should give back to society in accordance with what we have earned”.

In his address, Dr Yu said Yue Hwa was strongly committed to social responsibility and he hoped to work with CityU to nurture talent. He praised CityU for its outstanding performance in international rankings and recognised the University’s pursuit of innovation, its integration of teaching and research, and its enhancement of internationalisation, all of which provided students with globalised and diversified learning opportunities.

In his vote of thanks, Professor Kuo thanked Dr Yu for his support and generous donation. He said CityU had performed well in international rankings and attributed our success to contributions made by stakeholders such as Yue Hwa.

Located on the 1/F of the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building, Yue Hwa Theatre can accommodate around 160 people. It is well equipped with advanced audio visual equipment and is a highly suitable venue for lectures, seminars and forums.
