Support for Students with Special Needs at CSC Student Terminal Area

by Noel Laam

Most students may find learning at the CityU an enjoyable experience with the advanced IT facilities in place. However, some students with disability may have difficulties in sharing the joy because of their special needs. In order to enable these latter students to make the most out of their studies at the University, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) is recently equipped with new facilities to cater for the special needs of them.

Wheelchair Access

Two height adjustable tables are provided for wheelchair students attending the class in the CSC Student Terminal Area. Besides, a computer workstation is specifically designed for wheelchair students.

Facilities for the Visually Impaired

A screen-reader software "Dolphin Supernova" (USB version) and a notetaker "HIMS Braille Sense Plus" are provided for visually impaired students to use in the CSC Student Terminal Area. Dolphin Supernova is combined screen reader and magnifier with Braille Support. HIMS Braille Sense Plus is a notetaker and act as a Braille display from the computer. Students must reserve and check out these software and hardware at the CSC Service Counter.

Apart from that, a computer workstation is also installed for easy access by the Visually Impaired. It has been configured to work with "Dolphin Supernova" and "HIMS Braille Sense Plus".

For students who need to use these facilities for attending class inside the CSC Student Terminal Area, they are requested to submit the Special Equipment Booking/Cancellation Form to the Service Counter 2 working days in advance for arrangement. Telephone booking is also accepted at 3442 8340. Students may also make the online booking at http://crs.cityu.edu.hk/. The CSC will also work closely with the SDS and the Library to learn more about these needs.

One point to note is that these facilities are set up for students with special needs to attend classes inside the CSC Student Terminal Area only. For general study and coursework outside the CSC, they may use the facilities provided inside the Library.
