Broadband: An Express Highway to the Net

by Joe Lee

Fast Internet access is essential for our work and daily life. Inside the campus, our sophisticated campus network guarantees that you have fast Internet access. However, you can only dial up to the campus network using 56Kbps (or lower) modems from home. As technology evolves rapidly, a faster approach to access the Internet remotely has become mature. Broadband is a communications channel that has a bandwidth characterised by high data transmission speeds, and it is becoming the future norm for Internet traffic. Last December, the CSC arranged with Netvigator, Hong Kong’s first Broadband Internet Service Provider, to set up a roadshow counter outside the CSC to promote the Service to the CityU community. With the installation of an ATM card, users at home can enjoy a maximum download speed of 1.5Mbps and an upload speed up to 64Kbps. Comparatively, this broadband approach outperforms the traditional 56Kbps modem line.

The features of Netvigator 1.5M Ultra Line Package included:

  • The first 50 hours of Broadband Internet Service usage for free
  • Additional free 56K modem dial-up with unlimited Internet access at PNETS charge
  • Up to 8MB free storage
  • HK$2/hour for additional broadband access
  • HK$20/MB/month for additional storage
  • HK$139/month for first 6 months (minimum subscription period); HK$238/month thereafter

The special features and favourable promotional offer which was only for educational sector attracted a good number of subscribers (mainly students). The CSC will continue to support such promotional activities when they are found suitable and appropriate.
