263 CityUHK scholars named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists

 

A total of 263 scholars from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) have been named among the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” 2026 by Stanford University, based on their career-long citation impact, an increase of seven scholars compared to last year. Among them, two scholars were ranked in the global top 700, while two ranked among the top 10 globally in their respective academic disciplines, underscoring CityUHK’s exceptional academic and research standing.

Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Acting President; Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise); Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, Vice-President (Research); and Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) were among the list.

Over 240,000 scholars were included on this year’s list. Among those from universities funded by the University Grants Committee, four were ranked in the global top 1,000, including two from CityUHK: Professor Zhang Hua, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials, and Professor Chen Guanrong, Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Chair Professor in Engineering. Furthermore, Professor Chen Guanrong and Professor Liew Kim-meow, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Sustainable Engineering, ranked 6th and 8th globally in their respective academic areas. In addition, 15 CityUHK scholars ranked top 50 globally in their academic areas.

Together with the scholars named for their single-year citation impact, a total of around 400 CityUHK scholars were named to the list this year.

CityUHK’s academic influence has continued to grow in recent years, earning wide recognition through outstanding performances in various international rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2027, released in June this year, CityUHK achieved outstanding results, rising an impressive 11 places from last year to 52nd globally and placing the University firmly within the top 3% of the world’s elite universities. Notably, in the core indicator of “Citations per Faculty”, CityUHK achieved a remarkable result, ranking 2nd globally and 1st in Hong Kong.

CityUHK’s excellence in nanoscience and chemistry has earned international recognition. In the Nature Index 2026 Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Supplement and the Chemistry Supplement, the University ranked first in Hong Kong among the world’s top 200 research institutions. The achievement underscores the world-class calibre of CityUHK’s research community and highlights the significant impact of its innovative discoveries on scientific advancement and societal well-being worldwide.
