Study in Hong Kong, Aspire Globally: From CityUHK to Cambridge and home to give back

Ranked as the “Most International University in the World” by the Times Higher Education (THE) for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) continues to be recognised globally for its outstanding international outlook. In support of the “Study in Hong Kong” initiative by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, CityUHK actively attracts students from the Chinese Mainland and around the world to pursue their studies in Hong Kong. Through deep collaboration with leading global universities, CityUHK provides students with diverse exchange pathways, international exposure, and scholarship support—strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a hub for world‑class higher education.

As a university built on innovation and internationalisation, CityUHK is continually expanding its international network and forging partnerships with top institutions worldwide. Among these initiatives is a series of collaboration  with several colleges at the University of Cambridge, creating new opportunities for CityUHK students to pursue further studies abroad. These efforts underscore the unique value of “Studying in Hong Kong”: students receive high-quality education locally while gaining access to some of the world’s most prestigious universities—returning with global knowledge that fuels the development of Hong Kong and the nation.

One prominent example is Luo Zhihao, a CityUHK physics graduate from the Chinese Mainland, who exemplifies the success of the “Study in Hong Kong” vision. Drawn by Hong Kong’s international environment, Zhihao chose CityUHK for his undergraduate studies. Upon graduation, he was selected as one of the first cohort of 12 CityUHK scholarship recipients to pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Cambridge. He is now working towards a Research Master’s degree in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at Cambridge, where he excels academically and also contributes actively to college life, serving as Vice-President of the Postgraduate Student Union of Lucy Cavendish College (LCC).

Zhihao shared that CityUHK’s international learning environment played a pivotal role in shaping his cross‑cultural competence, leadership and global awareness.

“CityUHK didn’t just equip me with academic knowledge—it gave me the confidence and capability to step onto the world stage,” he said. “Receiving the scholarship was both an honour and recognition from CityUHK. I am proud to represent Hong Kong internationally.”
Since arriving in Cambridge, he has engaged in campus service and global learning programmes, including the two‑week Future Global Leaders Programme (FGLP), jointly organised by CityUHK and LCC. “I hope to bring what I’ve learned at Cambridge back to Hong Kong—to give back to CityUHK and the community, and to connect more young people with global opportunities,” he reflected.

Zhihao is now applying to return to CityUHK for PhD studies in 2026, aiming to combine research with technological innovation, contribute to long-term collaboration between CityUHK and Cambridge, and eventually become a professor who translates scientific breakthroughs into societal impact.

To support more students in pursuing world‑class education, the CityUHK–Lucy Cavendish College Scholarship programme, which commenced in the 2025/26 academic year, supports up to 20 students annually to pursue master's degrees at Cambridge.
CityUHK has also partnered with the Cambridge Judge Business School and the Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities to launch a variety of scholarships, empowering students from different disciplines to shine on the global stage.

CityUHK remains committed to strengthening partnerships with world-leading universities and showcasing Hong Kong’s vibrant, internationally connected higher education sector. Through these efforts, the University aims to further promote the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, attract more outstanding students from the Chinese Mainland and abroad, and reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a key global education gateway.
