Thirty-two CityUHK scholars honoured as Highly Cited Researchers, leading Hong Kong in proportion of listed faculty for the tenth consecutive year
Thirty-two scholars from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) were named Highly Cited Researchers 2025 by Clarivate, placing the University ninth in Asia and second in Hong Kong. In terms of faculty size, CityUHK leads Hong Kong in the proportion of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers for the tenth consecutive year, reflecting the exceptional calibre of CityUHK’s teaching and research teams and their sustained impact on the academic world.
Among the distinguished CityUHK scholars, four were named in multiple academic fields: Professor Guo Zaiping, Chair Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Professor David Lou Xiongwen, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry; Professor Zhang Hua, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials and Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering; and Professor Zhang Qichun, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Chemistry. Notably, Professor Lou was recognised in three academic fields, a distinction achieved by only 31 scholars worldwide.
The Clarivate list recognises scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated substantial influence in their fields by publishing multiple highly cited papers ranked in the top 1% by citations. This year, 6,868 scholars from 60 countries and regions were named Highly Cited Researchers 2025, with Hong Kong ranking eighth globally.
CityUHK is committed to advancing interdisciplinary scientific and academic research. In 2023, the University launched the Distinguished Visiting Professors Scheme, inviting about 50 renowned scholars from leading institutions worldwide to visit CityUHK. This initiative aims to expand the University’s research network and strengthen its global pool of academic talent.
CityUHK climbed to seventh place in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2026 and led Hong Kong in eight indicators, including “Citations per Paper”. The University also achieved outstanding results at this year’s Research Grants Council award presentation, with 19 scholars honoured, the highest number among all local institutions. These achievements underscore CityUHK’s leadership in academic research and innovation across Asia and globally.
