CityUHK organises table tennis event to promote sports for all and the holistic development of young people
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a table tennis event on 8 October to promote sports within the community and the University. The aim of the event was to give more students and other young people a taste of the table tennis and foster a passion for sports among students and the community in anticipation of the 15th National Games (National Games), which will commence on 9 November.
Notable attendees included Mr Chris Sun, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China; Mr Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK; Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President and University Distinguished Professor; and Ms Grace Yu Ho-wun, Council Member of CityUHK. They joined CityUHK student athletes and around 30 mentees of the Strive and Rise Alumni Club to enjoy the fun of table tennis.
In his opening remarks, Mr Sun expressed his appreciation to CityUHK for organising the event, which helped boost morale ahead of the forthcoming National Games. He emphasised that, through the event, mentees of the Strive and Rise Alumni Club would come to appreciate the equal importance of sports and academics. Mr Sun also acknowledged CityUHK’s unwavering support for student athletes, which plays a vital role in advancing sports development in Hong Kong.
In his welcome remarks, President Boey stated that this table tennis event showcased CityUHK’s belief that sports are essential for holistic education. He encouraged young people to make the most of the event and learn the values of perseverance, respect and teamwork through sports.
President Boey added that in support of the National Games, CityUHK would broadcast the events live, allowing the University community to experience the excitement of this grand sporting event and to cheer on the athletes from Hong Kong, China, particularly CityUHK student athletes.
Mr Sun and Mr Ngai then teamed up with CityUHK athlete Baldwin Chan Ho-wah and CityUHK alumni and former National Table Tennis athlete Chen Ke, respectively, for an exciting, friendly doubles match. The two teams were evenly matched, with Mr Sun’s team won by a narrow margin.
Mr Sun then played against a mentee from the Strive and Rise Alumni Club. Both participants gave it their all in their friendly match and Mr Sun successfully won again. Afterwards, all the mentees enjoyed learning basic table tennis techniques and practicing against each other under professional guidance.
About ten CityUHK student athletes will participate in the upcoming National Games. Among them is Baldwin, who recently won numerous world table tennis titles and is actively preparing for the Games. He shared his insights with Professor Alex Wong Chun-yuen, Dean of Students of CityUHK, emphasising the University’s commitment to supporting student athletes in all aspects of their lives through a wide range of comprehensive and personalised support and amenities that foster both academic and athletic development.
CityUHK is committed to strengthening connections, interaction and collaboration with the local community to bring about positive change that benefits both the University and the community. Through collaboration with the Government of the HKSAR, youth community programmes and organisations, the University helps young people broaden their horizons and build their confidence.
CityUHK is committed to supporting the diverse development of its students. To date, over 1,600 student athletes have been admitted to CityUHK through the Student Athlete Admission Scheme and the Student-Athletes Learning Support and Admission Scheme.
This community table tennis event provided an excellent platform for young people to learn about and experience table tennis, while relaxing and getting to interact with outstanding student athletes. This engagement helps them explore new interests and inspires new paths in their lives. CityUHK will continue to engage with the community, actively nurture athletes, and promote sports in the community through collaboration across departments to contribute to the development of local sports.
