Event: Press Briefing – Winning project for reconstructing a damaged community
Date: 22 April 2015 (Wednesday)
Time: 2:30pm
Venue: Room 8220, 8/F, Academic 3, City University of Hong Kong
Reconstruction work for a damaged community is of utmost importance after a natural disaster, as many people may lose their homes in the event. To help survivors with a temporary shelter or a permanent home, Yeung Carman and Cacin Wong Po-ying, two Year 4 students from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, have developed a fast, simple and low-cost method for rebuilding a damaged community.
Their innovative method has earned them the championship (in the under-25 category) in the Young Structural Engineers’ International Design Competition organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK. They were commended by adjudicators for their method which is not only practical and easy to implement but can also help alleviate psychological trauma.
Carman and Cacin have faced various difficulties during their studies, yet they have not been discouraged. Rather, they persevered and won a number of scholarships and awards. At the press briefing, they will explain their winning project, present a 3D model of a reconstructed community, and share their story of how they overcame difficulties.
With 27,000 members in 105 countries and regions around the world, the Institution of Structural Engineers is a leading professional organisation in the related field.
