Filmmaker Dr Ann Hui On-wah and Professor Leo Lee Ou-fan, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, will discuss the major themes and cultural background related to the early years of the Republic of China through Dr Hui’s new movie The Golden Era at a talk at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 19 September.

The talk is part of a special series for students delivered by popular writers/artists in celebration of CityU’s 30th anniversary this year.

Dr Hui’s new film depicts this particular period in China’s history through the life of the prominent Chinese female writer Xiao Hong.

During this period, idealistic intellectuals longed for love but in reality they met frustration and disappointment, and sometimes fell into despair. On reflection, some say this was a golden era, while others regard it as a ruined age.

A film about the making of The Golden Era will be screened before the talk.
