We would like to invite you to cover the following event:

Event:             Inventor of ‘iKnife’ discusses revolutionary anti-cancer treatment

Date:               24 October 2013 (Thursday)

Venue:             Lecture Theatre 17 (near Lift 6), 4/F, Purple Zone, Academic 1, City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong.

Time:               11:30am

Dr Zoltan Takats of the Department of Surgery and Cancer at the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London will discuss the “iKnife” at a distinguished seminar at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 24 October.

The iKnife can literally “sniff out” cancerous tumours by identifying tissue that might otherwise cause malignant tumours to return after surgery.

The new technology shows promise in the search for a solution to the perennial problem of tissue identification during surgery. Tumorous tissue left behind after surgery can result in the rapid and often aggressive recurrence of the cancer, while damage to healthy tissue during surgery may result in the loss of key physiological functions.

Dr Takats’ technology is called “Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry” (REIMS) and the title of his talk at CityU is “Mass Spectrometer in the Operating Theatre – Real-Time Identification of Tissues by Shotgun Lipidomics”.

REIMS works by converting certain molecular components of the tissue into gas-phase ions and then “sniffing” out the cancerous tumours.
